I never understood Fahrenheit, outside of using American appliances in the kitchen to heat and cook stuff.

Unlike the other imperial units, which are very impractical from every point of view, Fahrenheit is the only one that has a meaning – made for weather, going from very cold at 0° to very hot at 100°. Celsius does not have a good physical meaning either – physicists use Kelvins which is the true physical measure.
Edit: There is also the nautical mile – it is widely used in sailing and aviation worldwide because it is practical for navigation (1nm =1° across the equator).
CLCchampion on
Gonna get downvoted, but Fahrenheit > Celsius.
Edit: Most people use temp for weather. 0 degrees is very cold, 100 degrees is very hot, and 69 is nice. Celsius doesn’t use half their temp range between 0 and 100 for weather.
I don’t need a temp range anchored by the freezing point and boiling point. I know when water freezes bc it’s ice, and I know when it boils bc it bubbles and steams.

Do Canadians cook using Celsius or Fahrenheit?

I know both very well but still use Fahrenheit by choice.

To be fair, I’d say probably ~30% of Americans are fluent in both. Medical and manufacturing fields will get you fluent quickly. Once you have to convert something enough times, you just figure it out over time and memorize the conversion factors.

That’s it 25% tarrifs until you make the change to the wonderful great Fahrenheit. Love that Fahrenheit. Did you know it can tell you how hot it is. Wonderful. Everyone will use it.

It’s not as clear cut in Canada. The federal government imposed metric in 1975. But being so close to the US, there was always been a lot of influence from Imperial units.
For temperature, most hotel rooms in Canada have thermostats that default to Fahrenheit. At least if they are US chains. Fahrenheit is better for car temperature, because you can go up in full degrees, where Celsius is too big for that, cars go up by half degrees in Celsius, which is annoying for me.
Pools and hot tubs tend to be in Fahrenheit in Canada also.
It’s not just for temperature, there are lots of things in Canada that are done in Imperial units still.

There’s a lot of things about the US that I’m not proud of right now. But damnit, you can pry my Fahrenheit measurement of temperature from my cold, dead seventy-two degree fingers.

Maybe a hot take, but I think fahrenheit makes more sense when describing the weather. I agree with using the metric system in general, but in this case I think that 0 = really cold and 100= really hot makes more sense than 0= cold, but not terrible and 100= you’re dead.

I personally like Fahrenheit better. It doesn’t require decimal places to show the temp and temperature are all relative anyway. Imperial system is trash though. If we could just use the metric system for all other measurements sticking with F would be fine.
