At some point we’ll just stop respecting American intellectual property law and copy whatever they make for free.

This all sounds great actually. Europe has its own massive pharmaceutical industry that the US working on cutting off. They can just make these drugs and sell them in Europe to make up for the missed income in the US.
Alternatively, if EU is chicken shit about IP, India has a massive pharmaceutical industry that makes copies of most drugs, a deal can be made there as well.

Lol.
Denmark produces 70+% of all the insulin consumed in the USA.
Threaten to withhold that.

It is up to them whether they sell their drugs to us. It is up to us how much we are willing to pay for it. It is up to us to suspend their IP and make our own.

Extortion in a suit is still extortion.
I guess that’s why the EU’s Anti-Coercion Instrument covers Intellectual Property rights.
We have lots of high-standard pharma manufacturing plants in the EU. We also make a lot of the US‘ Viagra. Though I guess the US is getting used to having more shortcomings by the week.

Nice, this is an interesting way to threatening another country.
You better give us Greenland or we will not give your medicine to our own people.
Seem logical.

I mean, fine I suppose? No-one is forcing you to sell your product into Europe, but it seems like shooting yourself in the foot.

This is a ridiculous threat, the EU is the world’s biggest market for healthcare and state-of-the-art medicine. The way medical patents work means that these companies only have a couple of years to recoup their investments. Cutting out the European market means that this becomes a lot harder to do, unless the Americans will be paying more. The only reason that these companies think this might work is because it worked on the UK. These companies are bluffing with an empty hand.
The only sane reason behind this strategy is these companies signalling that they’re really trying to lower prices, but those darn Europeans are preventing it. They’ll go back to the Big Orange Turd and say: „please force the EU to agree to our demands or allow us to raise prices in the US again.“ The end result is self-damaging to the US.

stop the export of Viagra.

It’s already the case that a lot of novel medicines don’t reach European markets because payers don’t consider them worth reimbursing (usually as they are not deemed cost-effective)
Drugs aren’t getting cheaper to develop so this will continue unless a) us European countries decide we want to spend more on new medicines or b) Pharma is essentially turned into a not for profit business

This is not at all the relevant part of what they are saying:
„These voluntary agreements with the White House require companies to benchmark certain drugs in the US at prices in other developed countries ranging from Canada to Europe and Japan.“
It means they refuse to bring down prices in the US….

Prepare for more of these articles the coming weeks about pharmaceuticals, IT, energy and other essentials. The message from Trump about no longer feeling the need to be ‚peaceful‘ is far more serious than the ravings of a mad man. It’s a declaration that US is prepared to use violence against its allies. Maga’s US will do everything it can to damage Europe and Europeans to get what they want.
