It took the Mongols 45 years to conquer the Song Dynasty of China. If we include the Jin Dynasty territory under Jurchen control, it took the Mongols a full 75 years to conquer China.
The Song Dynasty is often renowned worldwide for its extremely prosperous culture, art, and economy; some Western historians even suggest it had the potential to become one of the first countries to embrace capitalism.
While its military strength was indeed relatively mediocre compared to other Chinese dynasties, it would be unfair to overly criticize its military capabilities.
The Mongol Empire was many times larger than the Song Dynasty, yet it still took a long time and incurred enormous costs to conquer it; even the Khan died in the wars of conquest.
The Song Dynasty was still more powerful than most countries in the world at the time, but unfortunately, it was located next to the Mongols.
Song Dynasty wasn’t particularly known for military prowess (well, except for the time of Yue Fei, Han Shizhong, etc.). I wonder how long Tang and Han Dynasties would last against Song’s adversaries.
