How do the authors determine if a country is communist?

TIL Vietnam only became a Communist regime after the end of the Vietnam war. (Yes, I know they didn’t control the whole country until then. I think the way the data is laid out is extremely misleading)

I’m sure the comments will be respectful and constructive, with no disputes about the data shown.

Starting only at 1950 sort of screws the data and prevents it from being beautiful in my opinion

Venezuela is not even self-described as communist.Â
Neither is/was Nicaragua.Â
This is bullshit

Why is Venezuela included? It is not in the same ideological camp as the other included countries and has made no claims of wanting to create a communist society like all the others have done.

China is not a communist country…

Gaddafi was communist? He was a proponent (and proposer) of the Third International theory
I just don’t think Libya could be defined as a Marxist-Leninist one party state.

Anyone who’s been to Vietnam in the last 20 years knows it’s as capitalist as any other SEA country if not more.
They won the war and then invited the ideology in themselves

Is China really a communist state? I thought it was to do with how your economy works, not how you label yourself.

I think the reason that OP consider Venezuela in, because OP consider Communist regime as a left dictator trash can.
But neither Venezuela or other real communist regime don’t consider Venezuela is a communist regime. It’s just a failure dictator left country.
