Die Entwicklung des Begriffs „Dritte Welt“: Von der Politik des Kalten Krieges zur wirtschaftlichen Verunglimpfung. Wie verwenden Sie es heute?

    1. I always thought „Third World“ was just a label for developing or poor nations. I looked it up, and the history is actually wildly different.

      The Cold War Definitions:

1st World: USA & Capitalist allies.

2nd World: Soviet Union & Communist allies.

3rd World: Everyone else (The Non-Aligned countries).

Technically, rich countries like Switzerland and Sweden were „Third World“ because they were neutral.

Since the Soviet Union fell, the „Second World“ vanished, but we kept „Third World“ and turned it into a synonym for „underdeveloped.“ Now, I hear people saying „Global South“ or „Developing Nations“ is the proper way to go because „Third World“ sounds derogatory (like third-rate).

My question: Is the term „Third World“ completely dead? Or is it still okay to use if we are talking about actual Cold War alliances?

The united states is now, basically, a third world country.

I guess they are trying to control the narrative?
