  1. Back in early 00s, one of putin’s promises was to bring gdp per capita to the level of Portugal in a few years

Russia’s economy fluctuates a lot in nominal terms because of exchange rate, not really a good comparison.

Once again proving that might makes right. You can be a complete and abject failure of a country by every single metric, but if you have an army and strong weapons you can exist indefinitely.

Europe needs to arm ourselves right now. We NEED the European Army or we won’t survive.

  4. A more interesting comparison would’ve been with the former eastern block countries. I think V4 + Romania is about equal to Russia now.

It’s because a russian would rather have an ICBM in his yard than a normal toilet. Russians don’t want to prosper, they want everyone to fear them. That’s what makes them feel good.

yeah but they still got gas and half the world’s nuclear arsenal, perestroika was a mistake

  7. If it’s nominal than Visegrád Group + Baltic states should also approach this number. If it’s PPP then it’s a different story.

  8. I only now learned about that little bit of Russia between Poland & Belarus. Every day is a school day.

  9. GDP is crap, anyone who thinks that Italy or the Iberian Peninsula have the same capacity to survive sanctions as Russia is delusional, Russia has a more self-sufficient economy.

  10. So Russia’s economy is the same as the combined economy of Spain and Portugal. But why is this a map? If it were a comment on the geographic size of Russia vs. the Iberian peninsula, the map doesn’t even show all of Russia.

Mediocre economy, endless war and mass casualties. Here’s ur paradise bro.

  12. PPP seem to be the new Russian talking point here. PPP is all but useless to measure the economy, especially one in a state of war economy.

  13. Spain is the fourth economic powerhouse in the EU. If not for Spain and Portugal, the EU would be in recession.

Tends to happen when the U.S. comes in and steals the accumulated wealth of a state that was a superpower for the last 50 years by calling it “shock therapy”.

  15. So 2 democracies 3 times less populated than Russia with no oil, no diamond mines, no minerals have the same nominal GDP than the wannabe superpower nation. Good
