Rob de Wijk, the renowned foreign affairs commentator, made a clear case in Trouw on Friday for the US to leave NATO. According to Rob, we need to stop repeating the mantra that “we can’t do without America.” ‚It’s a matter of will.‘ That’s just how it is. Now you might say: what am I supposed to do with that on the sports page of De Volkskrant?

But I mention Rob, a man after my own heart, for a reason. De Wijk has the courage to think the unthinkable: we are fed up with those cheeky bastards, kick those shitty Americans out!

We should follow his example. In line with Rob’s plea, I therefore call for a boycott of the World Cup soccer tournament this summer in the US. (It is also being held in Canada and Mexico, but the Dutch national team is not playing there, so they are not included in this call.)

Actually, I am fundamentally opposed to sports boycotts, which are usually weak displays of quasi-power. Because no one wants boycotts that cost a lot of money or disrupt the Concertgebouw Orchestra’s foreign tour, we turn to sports to appease our conscience: boycott.

Why should we boycott the World Cup and, if possible, the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles? In short: because of Donald Trump and what he stands for. And in particular because next summer’s World Cup threatens to become one big celebration of Trump fascism.

You can already picture the pompous bluffer sitting on the VIP terrace of MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, watching the World Cup final on July 19. That scene will be a repeat of a painful scene from ninety years ago: Adolf Hitler in the stands of Berlin’s Olympic Stadium. A scene for which the sport is still ashamed; never before has it so shamelessly sold its soul and allowed itself to be so easily turned into a dictator’s propaganda vehicle.

Never again, you might say, but in recent decades, the sport has proven to be stubborn. Sport is a prostitute that lends itself to many things. But a World Cup celebrating the delusions of grandeur of a racist, unscrupulous, and violent real estate tycoon and his cronies should be a step too far, even for her. Even if that sport is led by an unprincipled and cynical Swiss who likes to award peace prizes to warmongers.

A robust sports boycott only makes sense if it is part of a bigger story. That is why Rob de Wijk fits in so seamlessly here. A boycott of the World Cup and nothing else is a meaningless gesture. But it would be a start and an important signal; a sign that we do not blindly agree with everything those suckers come up with.

If European teams boycott the World Cup it would be the most shitty World Cup ever. Which fits perfectly with the shitty state the US is in. I say do it.

The easiest way to make fun of the world cup to be to not watch it through official streaming sites by paying money, rather use piracy websites to stream them so its their loss

    4. Key_Duck_6293 on

Just boycott American matches at the World Cup, not the Mexican or Canadian ones.

    5. humanistic_humanist on

Honestly, as an American I say do it. Wait for the Orange Man-Child to be out of office and then we try to rebuild relations.

Buy European. Especially tech and other strategic areas. The world is in upheaval and neither your organization, your country nor yourself personally want American jurisdiction over your important stuff.

The less leverage bad actors have over you, the more likely they are to leave you alone.

The first time qualifying for the world cup in 28 years and this is the one that we qualified for, dammit!

    8. I hate people that spout nonsense that don’t have to live with the consequences of their actions. Europe and EU is not as United as you seem to think.
USA has been our greatest ally and out peace keeper with only their presence, still is. I can totally see several countries with large milita joining Russia if the carrot is good enough.

    9. LeftKaleidoscope on

No, we should not break up NATO… but boycotting the world cup would be nice, and maybe teaching FIFA something too.

    10. Massive-Ordinary-338 on

Lets start with boycotting the World Cup. Without Europe this will be the worst World Cup.

    11. Schwiftychill on

I think you all underestimate how little the people you’re trying to send a message to care about the world cup and soccer, in general.

    12. Typingdude3 on

Does he realise most Americans don’t care about soccer? Boycotting the World Cup in America would be like boycotting baseball in Italy. Kicking America out of NATO would play right into Trumps hands and neuter any progress a few in Congress are attempting to make with Greenland. Gloves would come off at that point and Greenland would be lost.

Never understood these comments „Kick X county out of Y alliance“ Incredibly short-sighted and non-strategic.

It’s much easier and more prudent to kick a bad politician out of a governance function, than a country out of an alliance.

I don’t like this dealing in extremes. The trump administration, but they’re not lost. Let’s see how they deal with post-trump presidency before burning bridges. In the mean time decouple so that in 2028 you can leave nato without feeling it too much

    15. freezing_banshee on

The world didn’t care when the World Cup was hosted by Qatar. They’ll care even less when it’s in the US

    16. ZelezopecnikovKoren on

Problem is, there’s nothing quite like a not-shitty American and bad generalisations always get us all into trouble, including most of the trouble we’re in.

    17. Boycott the WC ..have a tournament in Europe available for all nations who qualified. We have the stadiums and infrastructure to go.

    18. DryWriter3169 on

As an american I agree, you dont want to come here, likely wouldnt even make it out of the airport

    19. 0 mechanics to remove a member, we can leave it and form a new alliance without the US though

      > Kick the shitty Americans out of NATO

NATO has survived the invasion of Cyprus and decades of Erdogan without kicking Turkey out. It can survive a few more years of the madman in the White House.

    21. Direct_Signature_256 on

Watch these MAGA think its a win to be kick out of NATO cause they always bring up well in the 1950s we were successful without Allies. I hate whenever you bring facts to them, they always go well back in my days.

    22. Nobody can get kicked out of NATO, it wouldn’t be worth a damn as a defensive military alliance if you just kick out members.

FIFA awarded President Donald Trump the inaugural “FIFA Peace Prize – Football Unites the World” on December 4, 2025, during the 2026 World Cup Final Draw at Washington’s Kennedy Center.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino praised Trump lavishly for ceasefires in Gaza, Congo-Rwanda, and other efforts, presenting the December 4, 2025, award as recognizing a leader who “cares about the people” and unites the world.

      “Hands off Greenland” 🇬🇱

    24. By all means boycott our world cup and ensure it’s shit but if we want this Trump shit to ever end pre-emptively kicking us out of NATO does not help.

    25. I can’t stand Trump but I see comments comparing Trump to Hitler and some are saying worse. With that said, I suspect many of the comments are very low IQ and not well thought out. Or bots…..Europe had Mussolini and Hitler, both far worse than anything Trump has done. Get a grip.
