  1. > Edward “Eddie” Brooks, 66, one of Brooks’ three children with his first wife, Florence Baum (they had three children: Stefanie, 69, Nicholas, 68, and Eddie), also appears in the documentary, and he recalls how his father changed after Bancroft’s death. “All the light went out. He was not in a good place,” Edward says. “We never dreamed that Anne would ever get sick or ultimately pass away. He just worshiped her.”

The curse of living to 100 years is outliving all your peers and partners. Sometimes even children.

  3. When my grandmother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, she elected not to get treatment. She was 89, and I will always remember her telling me “I buried my husband, I buried most of my friends, my son, and my son-in-law. I never wanted to be the last one standing.”

  4. He and Bancroft were absolutely brilliant in *To Be or Not To Be*, which I will maintain is underseen and not talked about out nearly enough. It’s right up there with his untouchable classics like *The Producers* or *Young Frankenstein*.

I believe that. When my mom died my dad lost his interest in everything. He died 9 months later. They had been married over 40 years. I truly believe that people can die from broken hearts.
