>Russian aircraft used unguided bombs in their raids on the city, while artillery and missile fire was anything but precise, even if directed against military targets. On March 9 the Russians bombed a maternity hospital in Mariupol, killing dozens. On March 16, an air attack on the city destroyed Mariupol Theater, which served as a shelter for civilians. The authorities, running out of time and resources, began to bury the dead in mass graves.
>By early April, the bodies were simply left lying on the streets. Vitalii Liumbomirsky told an American reporter: “You might know the smell of rotten meat, but this was deeper. The smell of rotting human bodies and of bodies being burned in crematoriums was everywhere.” Mayor Vadym Boichenk estimated the death toll at greater than 21,000.
* Serhii Plokhy, on the carnage at Mariupol
What happened in cities like Mariupol and Kharkhiv echoed the cities of Grozny and Aleppo. A heavy reliance on artillery and air bombardments to “kill cities” has resulted in massive casualties amongst local civilians.
>From the very first days of the war, Putin and the Russian security elite ostentatiously demonstrated their disdain for the language of human rights, their disregard for the laws of war, their scorn for international law and for reasons they themselves had signed. The arrested public officials and civic leaders. They built torture chambers for civilians in most of the towns they occupied in southern and eastern Ukraine.
>They kidnapped thousands of children, ripping some away from their families, removing others from orphanages, gave them new “Russian” identities, and prevented them from returning home. They deliberately targeted emergency workers. Occupying forces stole and exported Ukrainian grain and “nationalized” Ukrainian factories and mines, handing them over to Russian businessmen close to Putin.
* Anne Abblebaum, on atrocities conducted by Putin’s Russia in their war
I can’t wait for this war to end. The people of Ukraine has suffered so much they need peace soon.
