The health of Canadian democracy correlates with the quality and strength of its politicians. It’s been really weird watching us go from 5 or 6 parties to what has become functionally a 2 party system or at times even feeling like a 1 party system. We need reform in this area pretty badly, but also stronger leaders and politicians who are Canadians first and politicians 2nd. We need to figure out how to separate money and politics as well.
REFORM THE VOTING SYSTEM
No less than 13 studies, White Papers, Royal Commissions, Estats Générale, Citizens‘ Assemblies, and more have all concluded the same damn thing, for *decades* now: we need to add an element of proportionality to our dysfunctional voting system.
And a majority of Canadians want it, they’re not dumb.
Trudeau could have actually made a difference and left a small but positive legacy for Canada, had he kept this one promise (not the shit Alternative Vote/IRV system he was pushing though; I’m talking about a PR system which 90% of experts and 90% of citizens appearing before the House ERRE Committee recommended across Canada – but Liberals said there was „no consensus“).
First past the Post is too easily gamed/manipulated, by domestic and foreign interests. We need to reform our voting system before we get hijacked.
14% of Conservatives say an authoritarian government is sometimes needed, and 22% have low trust in our elections.
And they wonder why they get called Maple MAGA. This is alarming.
US influence is a cancer. Things like mistrust of the SCOC can only be damaging yet we have zero evidence to justify mistrust. Instead of tearing down our institutions for political gain, politicians should be helping strengthen them.
