The orange megalomaniac turning away friends so that’s what’s going to happen….a lot.

    2. I wonder if this means Canada will swap from US car standards to allowing euro/Unece. I don’t imagine China will make a special version of their cars just for Canada as every other major market allows UN approval (not USA)

This is great news, looking forward to seeing actual competition in the EV space.

Ouch low margin farm products for high margin tech. That’s not what you want your trade agreements to look like unless you are an uneducated 3rd world country that can’t make your own stuff.

A lot of EV seem very low to the ground, I’m interested but nervous about winter driving.

    6. China will control the car and probably motorbike market in a few years lol, they’re growing fast in Latinamerica

Short-term success for Canada.. They just became the first G7 nation to bow to China’s EV industry. Effectively damaging Europe and the US’s economy and showing great weakness. Huge blow to western unity, and a significant win for China.

Also companies like BYD and NIO can legally and financially justify signing contracts with local Canadian dealerships, renting real estate for parts distribution centers, and training Canadian mechanics on their specific software and battery systems. That cap they implemented was extremely short sighted and China knew it.

Also due to the energy without any commitment deal, China gets access to Canadian clean-tech intellectual property and engineering expertise without paying for it. And because there’s zero contract, China can at any time cut off purchases – giving them yet another chain on Canada.

All in all, very short sighted for Canada. They saw a small win and took it. But China effectively just trapped them.

A friendly reminder that Xi and the CCP is a real dictatorship who commits real genocide, restricts people’s freedom of speech and brutally crushes down protests.

    9. Well if Trump is successful in killing our automotive sector we don’t really have an incentive to keep tarrifs now do we.

    10. „[Carney] said there would be an initial cap of 49,000 vehicles on Chinese EV exports to Canada, growing to 70,000 over five years. China will reduce its tariff on canola seeds, a major Canadian export, from about 84% to about 15%, he told reporters.“

    11. I will be honest, while this is still better than the current situation, I still think it is a missed opportunity.

VW, Renault are also leaders in the industry and it would make more sense in alignment of interests.

Same but to a lesser degree for Hyundai/Kia.

And I would see a higher potential from them to manufacture in Canada than from the chinese manufacturers.

Sales of Chinese EV’s is through the roof. It’s fantastic that Canada is getting on board.

    14. Looks like China wants to completely kill off what there is of the German EV manufacturing industry. And Tesla as well. We’re letting it happen. I read the Chinese Byd cars are hard to get serviced. It’s sounding like long waits for parts too. Some people don’t like Tesla, some people think German EVs are too expensive. But is is really worth letting China dominate the EV industry in the west? It’s like Walmart for cars and it could decimate western car companies.

To help deliver the full potential of these partnerships, and build up our domestic manufacturing sector, Canada will allow up to 49,000 Chinese electric vehicles (EV) into the Canadian market, with the most-favoured-nation tariff rate of 6.1%. This amount corresponds to volumes in the year prior to recent trade frictions on these imports (2023-2024), representing less than 3% of the Canadian market for new vehicles sold in Canada.

It is expected that within three years, this agreement will drive considerable new Chinese joint-venture investment in Canada with trusted partners to protect and create new auto manufacturing careers for Canadian workers, and ensure a robust build-out of Canada’s EV supply chain.

With this agreement, it is also anticipated that, in five years, more than 50% of these vehicles will be affordable EVs with an import price of less than $35,000, creating new lower-cost options for Canadian consumers.

    16. Well done Canada. Keep decoupling from the US and leave them behind in the dirt.
As orange adolf alienates more and more former allies and trade partners the rest of the world moves on without him. Soon the US will be completely isolated.

    17. Now follow European vechicle standards and regulations, please.
I want my amber turn signals.

    18. Fogboundturtle on

Chinese EV as so much better than Tesla and they will be more affordable for everyone. This is good for consumers.

    19. The current auto manufacturing ecosystem will be unrecognizable in a decade. I’d be terrified if I was in the automotive sector right now.

I am not even saying what we’re working to is bad, I think this entire thing is truly unavoidable.

There’s a level of financial bloodshed coming that’s incomprehensible . It’s clear the US is set on stripping all manufacturing from the world and bringing it back to the US.

The moves we’re making are our best chance at coming out of the ashes swinging.

    20. I agree with this 100%. The landscape for vehicles is changing Anything we can do to limit the amount of Teslas being purchased, I’m all for it.
