Struggling on Winds of Winter but it could be the longest yet, and quitting would be „total failure“, anyone else feel this mix of hope and exhaustion?

Why is he talking to The Hollywood Reporter when he could be writing. 🤦‍♂️

At this point he needs to just stop sharing updates until the book is actually released

I just don’t even care anymore. Even if he does finish this one there little no chance he finishes the series that he laid out. Maybe if he makes this the final book I’ll give it a read. I’m going to treat this like I treat TV shows now, not watching until the series is complete.

Oh cool it’s your yearly update of „it’s not done yet“

Honestly the best thing creatives can do is not set themselves public deadlines

  6. them getting something wrong in the very first sentence is perfect. It is not the final book in the series, although it’s probably the final book we can perhaps expect lol. Journalism is in such a crummy place these days.

He’s actually touching on the bigger problem, before the show ending gave him a second one to deal with…between books 3-5 he expanded the character roster so far that he now has to plan out an intricate story for like 30+ characters to be involved with and clearly he has been struggling to figure out how to weave them together.

The other issue is the show using what was clearly going to be his real ending but without half the setup and half the characters he has available in the book so now given how upset everyone was at the finale and the show „spoiling“ the ultimate end he’s stuck figuring out how to achieve the same goal but make it different and better.

I would doubt he ever finishes it.

I mean, you killed off your potential protagonist at the end of the series, with daenerys coming in a close second, she wasn’t in the first chapter of the books. I felt like he just nailed the coffin and didn’t watch the show. Spent a lot of time reading tho.

  9. Oh just enjoy your life George, youre an elder, you got money. Live it up and relax.

Hasn’t released a book in 15 years, and is struggling to get the next one (was releasing them every 1-5 years) and there are two more to go.

I truly wish I had never picked up these books or watched the shows. Sad.

Should have been out 12 years ago, but better late than never. Probably going to be never, though.

Isn’t there a planned final book after Winds of Winter? He definitely ain’t finishing this series.

  13. It’s been awhile since I’ve picked up any of the other books but he left off by adding a ridiculous number of new storylines and character arcs. He may have an ultimate outcome in mind but he has no idea how to wrap it all up and get there.

He would have been far better off completing this series and taking the ideas of some of the new storylines and writing additional one-offs or another same-universe series.

  14. He alludes to Dickens novel but ignores the obvious solution.

Rather than one big book, break it apart and release in installments.

He does not write like an ordinary writer so it doesn’t make sense to stick to a scheduling plan that’s meant for ordinary writers.

It is not even the last book in the series?!?!
Maybe one day we can Dream Of Spring.

  16. He’ll die with the series unfinished.
Wish he’d just pass it off to someone else to finish it with his guidance.

I’ve forgotten just about every detail from the books. I’m honestly not sure I’ll read it if it ever does come out

  18. Critical-Snow-7000 on

As obsessed as I was with the published books, I don’t even know if I would read this if and when it comes out.

He gives the same update once a quarter. I’d respect him more for f he just came out and said “I don’t know how to finish the book the way I want. It’s never going to be finished.”

This basically summarizes his whole writing style. It’s always seemed like he never really knew what to do with the story or who the characters actually were, with most of the character development simply drawing from their own sufferings and not much else. The only haymakers he had were surprise kill-offs, and it seems that most readers who read all the books (myself included) only really did so because of time already invested and hoping for a payoff. Being a fan of RR Martin is like having Stockholm Syndrome, and honestly at this point I doubt there will ever be any story arc payoff that makes reading WoW worth it.

  21. He’s had a mere 15 years to work on this book. He just needs a little more time.

  22. DetailHour4884 on

At this point I don’t even care. I am as likely to finish the series as he is.

  23. I’m never going to read it so I don’t really care. At this point he’s completely lost my interest in the story.

  24. slamcontact on

I just think he needs to admit and accept he will never finish it, ecspecially when he busy helping with the tv shows and that.

  25. StrangerDanger9000 on

And yet there’s still supposed to be another book after Winds of Winter

  26. Because he saw how people reacted to the finale of the show and said “fuck that” and went to sleep on a pile of money.

  27. Confident-Visual7651 on

Every month its the same story give it up guys, its not happening

  28. He’s struggling because he’s never had a fully fleshed out concept but feels compelled to write anyway because nobody will shut up about it.
