Are these figures based on prewar population; as in would they class those who fled to Europe to seek asylum draft dodgers?

  2. donkeykong64123 on

I dunno, I’ve seen so many brave keyboard warriors on reddit tell Ukrainians to keep fighting till the end. Perhaps we can supplement these desertions with these brave western redditors 😆

  3. Not too bad by historical standard for a fourth year of brutal war.

In WW1 Russia collapsed in 3 years, and in WW2 it was mass shooting deserters and sending their families to gulag.

  4. Therefore the West should accelerate weapon deliveries and drop the restrictions. Taurus missiles and Gripen jets would kill way more Russians than discussions about „why people aren’t eager to fight in the trenches“.

I don’t blame anyone for doing this. You have one life to live and not wanting to die in war is a pretty logical stance.

  6. Zelenskyy did the same four times (15.04.2014, 23.06.2014, 15.08.2014, 10.05.2015), according to Ministry of Defense.

Here’s the article from the site that is often quoted here (in Ukrainian): https://www.pravda.com.ua/news/2019/04/13/7212159/

Similar article from RadioSvoboda (basically Ukrainian branch of RadioFreeEurope, also in Ukrainian): https://www.radiosvoboda.org/amp/news-u-minoborony-rozpovily-chy-sluzhyv-v-armii-zelenskyy/29879219.html.

This is one of the most interesting parts (translated with DeepL):

    > At the same time, Rimma Zelenska, **mother of** presidential candidate **Volodymyr Zelensky, said** in a comment to Hromadske TV on April 13 that her son had long been registered in Kyiv and **that she had not received or seen any summons** addressed to him in Kryvyi Rih.
    >
    > According to media reports, in April 2014, just a few days after the first of the summonses mentioned by the General Staff was sent, **Zelensky’s mother called him during his public press conference on the occasion of the presentation of a new comedy TV show to inform him about this summons**. According to those reports, Zelensky said at the time that, as a conscript, he would “go to war,” but claimed that the documents should have been sent to his place of residence in Kyiv, where he is registered.

  7. As they should. In fact, everyone should avoid being drafted. I wonder how that would look like.

  8. Went to Thailand for my honeymoon a few years back. If you closed your eyes on the beach, it would sound like you’re in Russia. Thousands and thousands of them absolutely everywhere you looked.

You mean to tell me people don’t want to sacrifice themselves?

  10. shumpitostick on

How much is that in percentages?

(To be clear, desertions out of people who served in the war and dodgers out of the population who is eligible for the draft)

Can’t blame them really. Wouldn’t be an issue if russia hadn’t invaded.

I whole heartedly support Ukraine. But yeah, I’ve seen quite a few Ukrainian men here in the south coast of the UK, to be fair, with their families. From all the combat footage I’ve seen, I can’t say I blame them

  13. Aromatic-Arugula-565 on

Ukraine has oligarchs, and has been a corrupt state, I can’t blame anyone for not wanting to die for them.

  14. Bulkylucas123 on

I mean is it really shocking? A lot of people have wised up to the fact that the serious risks taken in war aren’t going to be reward while the potential consequences to you are can be dire. I’m not suprised if many would view seeking shelter elsewhere as a better personal alternative.

  15. I saw a video today of ukrainian women partying in western countries, and beside that footage is video of ukrainian men dying to drone strikes. It made me really angry. I checked my emotions cause thats what propaganda does, gets you all worked up. Still an ugly comparison.

During and before WW2, decent men were respected for just being good, honourable men with good values.

They could find a wife, a decent job, buy a house, support a family and be a leader in the home and in their communities. Men lined up in droves ready to serve their country.

Now, jobs are shit, houses cost 13 times the median income and all men see online are women being indoctrinated to believe they all deserve a 6ft5 millionaire and anyone less is a useless buffoon.

There’s nothing left worth fighting for.

  17. you dont chose where you get born but you can chose what you fight for if its a free country

  18. garbagecan1992 on

i don t blame them at all.

risking your life is already problematic, but risking your life while oligarchs have all the assets and send their family outside of the country?

at the very least conscripted soldiers should be entitled to a piece of the country. instead they receive far less than even a average job

even when faced with a existencial crisis taking assets from people leaving the country to give those staying is a no deal

what a joke. even servants in the dark ages received better treatment

  19. OneSailorBoy on

People saying they are weak men to avoid drafting need to stop playing video games. There are no respawns. In a war where the entire world was introduced to drone warfare of unimaginable proportions, even the hardcore trained guys are finding it difficult to adjust and adapt. How the fk are untrained civilians going to survive?

  20. DepressedBarni on

For people writing – the draft is outdated. Just imagine saying this in 1939. What life would you have now..

  21. It’s a real catch 22 because I’m not saying that I want to get blown up by a drone, I’d prefer to be an old man with a big family. That only makes sense.

However, if my country were invaded by an authoritarian aggressor that doesn’t care about its own people, there would be no country left worth living in. And the question is, do you fight bravely, to a possibly pointless death? Maybe at that point survival is the best option.

I dunno man, fuck Russia though.
