>In order to increase its military presence in Greenland, Denmark is launching a NATO exercise in the region. It is now clear that Germany will also be participating with several soldiers.
>Germany is sending Bundeswehr soldiers to Greenland tomorrow. Government circles confirmed a report to this effect in the Bild newspaper to t-online. „We are participating in an exercise led by NATO countries called Arctic Endurance,“ they said.
>The Bild newspaper reported that an „advance team“ from the German Armed Forces could leave as early as tomorrow, Thursday. According to information from t-online, this will involve only a few soldiers. A government spokesperson told the Reuters news agency: „Germany will send a good dozen soldiers to Greenland tomorrow as scouts.“
>The NATO exercise is being conducted under Danish leadership. This is according to a joint statement by the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Greenlandic Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Research. According to the statement, this is taking place in connection with military exercises involving aircraft, ships, and soldiers—and in close cooperation with NATO allies.
>Reason for the exercise: „security policy tensions“
The aim is to train the ability to operate under the special conditions in the Arctic and to strengthen the presence of the defense alliance. According to the statement, the exercise activities could include supporting Greenlandic authorities such as the police, monitoring systemically important facilities, deploying fighter jets in and around Greenland, performing naval tasks, and receiving allied troops. The reason for this is that „security tensions have spread to the Arctic.“
>Sweden also announced that it would send military personnel to Greenland on Wednesday. This was in response to a request from Denmark, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson wrote on X. „Several officers from the Swedish Armed Forces are arriving in Greenland today. They are part of a group from several allied countries,“ the post said.
>Norway will send two soldiers as part of improved cooperation within NATO, Defense Minister Tore Sandvik told Reuters news agency on Wednesday.
>Greenland is an autonomous part of the Kingdom of Denmark and thus part of NATO. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius had clearly opposed the US’s claims to Greenland.

12 whole soldiers? I understand that it’s an „advance team“. But come on, it just sounds so pathetic.

I get the idea that a US invasion cannot be successfully opposed militarily, and that the presence of EU soldiers is intended to force the US to use lethal force against them, in the hope that this would deter the invasion.
I get it.
But, really, 12 soldiers from Germany? 2 from Norway? To make this work, you need at least a few hundred soldiers from Europe.

Should be a reinforced company of up to 200. If 10+ EU nations did that, along with Denmark sending 1,000+, it would be a very formidable force occupying every town, Port, and airfields that would require violence from the US to remove.

This is very, very bad news for all of us living in EU specifically. This basically means that the threat of US invading Greenland is very present and very real and consequences could be deadly for EU as it is. This is without a doubt an attempt to divert EU attention from Ukraine and eastern border of EU in general. This is Trump covering for Putin once again but this time on an unheard before scale – they are basically cooperating against entire EU.

People have to realize these soldiers aren’t being sent to ‚defend against America‘, they’re trying to negate Trump’s argument that Greenland isn’t bolstered militarily enough to defend against external threats.
If America actually invaded Greenland, they would have to withdraw immediately.

If the US wants it the US will take it. It’s time to stop pretending that isn’t the case. Countries should be working on strategies to decouple, but in terms of tech and trade this is a 20 year exercise. They just need to start now and bear the next 4 years.
US military capabilities aside, everyone can talk tough until this administration forces Amazon Web Services/Microsoft/etc to turn their services off. Europe will be in the dark ages for years. Say goodbye to healthcare, energy and any form of government. It will be mayhem and anarchy. People will be killing each other in the streets. You’re crazy if you think he wouldn’t do this. He took Maduro over a speech in a matter of minutes.
Edit – I often wonder if it is just naive teenagers with a warped world view on this site, or bots. If you’re only here to reinforce a misguided world view you’re going to struggle in real life. Down vote away, but it changes nothing.

Canada does a shit ton of winter warfare exercises this time of year. What better time to work on interoperability with our NATO allies.
