Yeah might suck for Ontario but doing nothing just to make Ontario happy will only deepen prairie alienation.

Get European models here. Europe: Our friends and allies. We need to reinforce those relationships. Accept EU standards for Canadian vehicles.
Buying more cheap Chinese shit while they stole our IP on an industrial scale is what got us here. Anyone remember Nortel, our technology crown jewel?

Let them sell their cars here. People who want them will buy them, people who don’t won’t. Let the consumer decide. Being in a trade war with both the world’s biggest economies won’t end well. If there’s a market then maybe Canadian manufacturers should do something about their pricing.

They gotta keep the Chinese happy if they’re going to buy our oil. If that means we get cheap (ish) cars then so be it

The US wants to take back their auto industry. They’ve literally said this. Canada needs to pivot away from manufacturing with the US brands and open the door to new ones, even if they’re Chinese. Before it’s too late.
Nonamanadus on
Well if Canada dropped the EV tariffs that would nuke the big three American manufacturers. In this day and age even being confined to just the US market would make for expensive autos.

Trading fake fascism for actual communism, I love the world we live in right now. Honestly remove the tariff let people buy these „cheap“ EV’s we can make them this cheap and people would revolt if we subsidized them the way the CCP do.

What a message this sends about how easy it is to get us to back down, „just start beating on us and we’ll give up“.
Also, according to Carney, China goes from our „greatest security threat“ less than a year ago, to now being where we want to import cars from and increase trade with. Almost like he was lying to get elected and downplay his China ties or something…
No-Yak5613 on
Phased abolition of tariffs over several years to give domestic auto manufacturers time to adapt, and for the US figure out what it wants from us. Regulations to ensure that the software in the chinese ev’s doesn’t spy on us. Maybe have BYD open up factories to assemble cars here. And then let’s go.. We need to diversify away from the US, and show to them that we also have options.

People do not want Chinese goods at a cost, they don’t last
So, lift the tariffs. It’s not going to matter lolol
Fords and Hondas are still going to be the #1 selling vehicles, and the ev craze in general has kind of hit a wall
Very few people going to pick a $30,000 Chinese start up ev over a $28,000 Honda that will last 40 years
FARMHANDYO1 on
Please bring them in. I don’t think that Canadians realize how advanced Chinese cars are compared to what you can get from any other brands around the world. Massaging seats on mid tier models, reclining seats as mid range features on many SUVs.
You would have to be crazy to not want these brought in. And at 30% less money than most of the competition!

I feel that if they decide to build factories here, there is going to be a huge cultural clash. The same can be observed by TSMC Taiwanese workers and their US counterparts. Not necessarily to say which side is the right way, because the world is getting more competitive, but I just feel there is a huge gap. I hope we can mend the gap somehow. I’d say, let’s start by building maintenance shops and storage spaces in major cities, and if it works out let’s consider part/battery factories, and then car factories.
DarkRainLife on
Inexpensive and artificially low priced Chinese BYD vehicles sounds good in theory but China already has a monopoly on global manufacturing. It’s not hard to see the posturing China does with other countries within its grip. Do we really want to abandon our automotive industry and within 5-10 years have the price of EVs completely under the authority of China? Which is an authoritarian regime with a difference in geopolitical views from ours.
Business-Hurry9451 on
So the tariffs on Chinese EVs go down to zero and, in a spirit of co-operation, the tariffs on Canola go down to 99%. Cool, as long as you don’t like working in Ontario.

I went to a BYD dealership in Mexico recently and the quality of their cars is top tier.
If people think that China makes absolute crap they are either stuck in 1990 or blatantly racist there is no in-between. They have way more talented engineers, doctors and scientists than us and that isn’t up for debate. Get over yourself Canada take the cars and allow Canadians to put their Canadian pesos to work buying a vehicle they can afford

I see Canadians a little bit too happy diving into this. I know we have alot of communists but how do we call everyone bots and think the sentiment in this thread is organic?
The „lesser of two evils“ argument doesn’t remotely justify any of this, as much as I love Chinese culture & folks.

Perfect! We should outsource all manufacturing overseas and make close to nothing ourselves.

If Tesla can be made in China and sold at an overpriced premium then I see no reason why EVs from China cannot be allowed. At the end the consumer will benefit from lower prices
