For me, I would probably take the 22000 on any given day if the journey is excessively long but I can tolerate a 29000 if the journey isnt too long like Connolly to Maynooth is the max distance Im fine with sitting in a 29000 for

Very under-rated feature.

The 29000s are noisy and filthy. A reservoir for disease. The floors are also horrible, bubbling up and not fitted correctly.

The 29000s invariably smell of vomit and I do also think the 22000 seems to have higher capacity? The only issue with the 22000, imo, is when it’s rammed, people won’t move towards the middle so that others can get on.

As the only person who actually seemingly commutes to Dublin 29000 far and away.
The 22000 was lovely when i was in college at non rush hour times but you do be crammed like a sardine if the train is in anyway busy.

The cork-mallow and Cork commuter network lines (which I use a lot) use a mixture of both and the 22000 is a far less miserable experience.

A 22000 is a hideous place to be if the service is at crush capacity. Vestibules are not properly air conditioned and the aisles are narrow to stand in
But for any time the trains aren’t that busy, they’re vastly better.

The 22000 is absolutely useless for busy services in the Dublin area. I have to get one every morning during rush hour and by the time it gets to my stop it’s rammed, meaning I have to stand in the aisle or squashed in between carriages with nothing to hold on to.

If you get a seat on the 22000 then its no contest. An armrest between the 2 seats is a luxury. I actually get the 30 minutes earlier train in the morning because it’s the 22000 and I get a nice comfy seat

It depends on the commute, the 22000’s are definitely better for LONG distance commutes for sure they were designed for that but the problem with them is that on crowded parts like Dublin the doors become a major pinch point to get in an out of as they’re at the ends of the carriages and can take a good while to get off they’re not as good for high density commuter areas though, the 29000’s are much better for Dublin at least because the doors are positioned better and allow for quick boarding and disembarking and as much as people might dislike them they’re not always in such a dire state and are relatively OK, they have been cleaning up some of them over the last year as well.

29000 is a rather bare bones and by now well worn out short haul commuter train. The 22000 is a much newer regional express / full intercity train. There isn’t really a comparison be had. It’s like comparing a clapped out Hiace and a modern Hyundai hybrid with all mod cons.
The CAF 29000 is a commuter train though so can handle crush loads – they’re in dire need of a refurb, but it seems they cant spare any due do demands. The 22000 isn’t supposed to be used like that. It’s for sitting down on mid to long distance

the 29000 is so inaccessible, the only place i can store my walker safely is by the wheelchair/bike area. there are no additional seats there, so i left having to sit on my walker which is not at all safe. my other option is hoping i get on when the train is empty, and i can take up 2 of the priority seats and fold it up next to me.
the 22000 ? no issue. all i have to do is go to the accessible carriage, there’s a spot for my walker and a seat right in front of it. no trying to squish it into a tiny space. i don’t even have to fold it. just put the breaks on and away i go.

These are two entirely different classes of train. The 1/4 3/4 door layout is to deliver higher capacity and faster boarding times at the expense of comfort. Vestibule doors require longer dwellings times but improve passenger comfort. Plus the 29000 are insanely loud (partly because of the doors)
The 29000s are tolerable for short distance routes but god they’re ancient. Also because they’re diesel, they’re rubbish for metro style services, and the seating configuration limits capacity. Stupid vehicles all round. I don’t know what the point of them even is beyond cost cutting.
And seems the plan for dart+ is basically to use a similar configuration as the 29000s. No toilets, not properly electric, and doors directly into the carriage. Really not suitable for the longer distances to drogheda. Compare with the Paris RER and most German S-Bahn systems, which run trains that are much more like the 22000s than the 29000s

22k seats are far nicer and the trains less noisy. But they are a lot more awkward to board and alight since they’re primarily for InterCity rather than commuter journeys. That’s where the 29k are better, especially at peak times when it’s rammed to the gills.

I used to spend a lot of time on both and the 22000 is the obvious answer but I always seemed to get a better sleep on the 29000. I always found the seats in the 22000 are too stiff and upright to have a decent kip.

22000s are great trains overall, relatively high quality and comfortable as far as diesel multiple units go. Despite that, I find myself grumbling when they’re out on commuter routes. They’re not designed for short distance, therefore it’s often a hassle having to walk through the small doorways and sit down, even if you’re only on board for 5 minutes.
Likewise, 29000s are very loud and seem to produce a lot of fumes, but they’re well suited for a high capacity commuter service. It’s ridiculous that they’re often put on routes as far as Wexford and Longford. If they were refurbished and maybe had their engines done up, I’d be happy to keep them alongside the new DARTs or on the Cork commuter services.
