We don’t need the government to help thank you. The most terrifying words ever: „I’m from the gvmt, and I’m here to help“. No thanks.

x doesnt have a large prescence in canada it wouldnt be that hard for them to pull out (and elon has demonstrated he really doesnt care about X bringing in revenue at this point its just a hobby for him now)

which means our leverage over this is pretty small bordering on none

i guess we could go full authoratarian and throw up our own great firewall like the other dictatorships but that hopefully doesnt come to pass

  3. Oh yeah. We totally need the government telling us what we can and cant see. Who we can and cant talk to and what we can and cant watch.

I’m sure you guys will love the Nanny state this time. All those videos of Israel killing palestinians? They would be banned (Much like the UK limiting the ability to view protests). This entire board is incredibly naive.

I don’t disagree with the idea – the state absolutely should prevent them from creating a machine that makes fake porn of random people. The problem is that very few states are actually sovereign when it comes to regulating global tech companies, Canada just doesn’t have anything we can use for leverage. We can’t threaten them with arrest for non-compliance because they don’t live here, and if we ban the website they will either (a) not notice; or (b) notice slightly and decide they don’t care. Dealing with capital of this scale is above the paygrade of the Canadian government, we’ve got no leverage.

We need to find a way to get back to the days when the worlds modes of communication weren’t controlled and tampered with a small handful of fascist tech-billionaires. It can be done. That’s the main problem and why someone like Elon can somehow get away with this along with everything else he’s done with zero accountability.

The proper venue to hold Twitter to account for producing child pornography is the criminal courts, not bills of attainder. There is no such thing as a government body that can be trusted with the power to ban an entire country from accessing a website in a country with parliamentary sovereignty.

I dont see why we need to „ban“ the platform itself

We have more then enough existing laws to deal with deepfakes

Distribute a non consensual image of someone else? = jail

Possess or distribute an image of someone underage? = jail

On top of this majority of platforms have more than enough identity drift and other built in safeguards against even creating these types of images / videos
