Did someone uninvent drones? Did we all miss pluckly little Yemen standing down an air craft carrier? Sure seems like surface fleets are a terrible investment in this day and age. Gurney addresses this sort of, but in a way that suggests he does not know drones can fly over the water:
>A lot of writing on military affairs these days is focused on newer technologies and emerging weapons systems. Drones are a big one. But it’s important to remember that the Earth is an awfully wet place. Most of the major conflicts or potential conflicts rocking the world today have at least some meaningful oceanic or coastal component
So although the article focuses a bit more on the geopolitical challenges being faced by the Canadian navy I wanted to sum up where our current progress is at.
They mention the final AOPS is under construction for a total of 6 plus the two being built for the coast guard are starting to come together. The first DDG of the River class HMCS Fraser keel laying ceremony was last year with 15 on order not only to replace the aging Halifax class but also the retired Iroquois class destroyers. New armed naval patrol aircraft are on order (Boeing P-8’s) and a new fleet of submarines is just in the beginning stages of procurement.
The article didn’t even mention the new fleet oilers almost complete in Vancouver with one already in the water undergoing final fitting out.
Interestingly it now looks like a larger Kingston class replacement is being envisioned too.
> And there’s also growing talk about a new smaller, mid-range class of Canadian warship, dubbed, for now, the Continental Defence Corvette.
So here’s to some optimism in the face of typical Canadian procurement woes, the national shipbuilding strategy is starting to pay off and we may just be ready for an increasingly hostile world.
