Dies ist die Absichtserklärung meines Großvaters, als er in die USA kam. Darin steht, dass er aus einer Stadt namens Sweldel kommt, aber wenn ich das nachschlage, kann ich nichts darüber finden. Er verließ Bremen. Möglicherweise hat sich der Name der Stadt seitdem geändert, oder die Stadt ist jetzt Teil eines anderen Landes, da dies vor dem Zweiten Weltkrieg geschah.

It could be St. Wendel near Trier, that’s the best I can come up with.
Seems like a typo or an error in the transcript like the name. The letter you identified as „l“ is likely an „i“. What makes it additional complicated: many towns of this time became part of larger cities. The city of Bremen was an important port for migrants to America, which means that it does not allow any conclusions to be drawn about his place of origin. The combination of the letters „sw“ is also rather uncommon – maybe a „Sch“ was meant.
The name Max or Maximilian could actually tell that he is from the South of Germany or Austria. About all ships to the USA left either in Bremen or Hamburg.
I played with the name „Sweidel“. But the only name that comes close is Scheidel (Burscheid) in Luxembourg.
