French here. It’s easy to choose when you can find acceptable 75cl wine bottles for the price of a mid 33cl beer.
Crazy how closely the beer/wine/spirits split used to match the Germanic/Romantic/Slavic split.

I see a good chunk of Western Europe has been consistent in their choice of beverage over the years.
