    1. Lack of support for people on weight loss drugs leaves them vulnerable to nutritional deficiencies, say experts

**People prescribed the new generation of weight loss drugs may not receive sufficient nutritional guidance to support safe and sustainable weight loss, leaving them vulnerable to nutritional deficiencies and muscle loss**, say experts at UCL and the University of Cambridge.

In research published today in Obesity Reviews, the team, led by Dr Marie Spreckley from the University of Cambridge, found a lack of robust evidence surrounding nutritional advice and support and the impact this has on factors such as calorie intake, body composition, protein adequacy, and patient experiences.

Weight loss drugs such as semaglutide and tirzepatide – available under brand names including Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro – mimic the naturally-occurring hormone glucagon like peptide-1 (GLP-1), released into the blood in response to eating. The drugs suppress appetite, increase a feeling of being full, and reduce food cravings.

These drugs can reduce calorie intake by between 16-39%, making them a powerful tool to help people living with obesity and overweight. However, there has been little research to examine their impact on diet quality, protein intake, or adequacy of micronutrients (vitamins and minerals). **Evidence suggests that lean body mass – including muscle – can constitute up to 40% of total weight lost during treatment.**

    2. „May not receive sufficient guidance“ should be the theme song for the American medical system.

    3. doesn’t all weight loss, regardless of type, cause at least %25 lean mass loss on average?

‘May’.  There’s some talk about excess fat.

All of these are concerns with any weight loss – the difference here is the weight loss is actually happening to the point where you can worry about this as the next step.

I know a dozen people taking these kinds of meds for over a year and not one of them did/doing any bloodwork or even taking blood pressure or anything throughout.

    6. Every person I know that take these meds have not changed their eating habits one tiny bit, although they are eating less. But….they still eat garbage: chips, pop, fast food….total crap….but they lose weight.

All the people I know who have taken these drugs look less bad, but not better.

(cutting body fat makes you look less bad. Resistance training and sufficient protein makes you look better)

I always figured if people who eat junk only change to eat less junk, it’s almost inevitable they run into nutrition problems. I take a multivitamin because of how tedious it is to eat a well-rounded diet, especially when restricting calories.

People may be thin, but they aren’t healthy, especially if they treat this like a magic pill that doesn’t require substantial lifestyle improvements. We’re fools if we don’t understand that.

    10. So people cant‘ spend a bit of time to check their diet and basic nutrition facts but are happy to buy something from pharmacy… it’s not rocket science really. The whole idea of finding some magic pill for everything seems so strange.

    11. That muscle loss likely includes the heart… which obviously is bad https://www.ualberta.ca/en/folio/2024/11/weight-loss-drug-found-to-shrink-heart-muscle.html

You know who also looses muscle mass? People who lose weight naturally.

I was on zepbound for a year. I lost 10% of my body weight. For months I was stuck at a weight. My doctor told me she thinks my body stopped losing weight because it was being starved. 3-4 days after taking the shot each week I would legit forget about food and water. I’d eat a meal. I stopped the medication (hoping for bb). I do plan to go back on again but we will lower dosage. I had most success at the starting dose.

    14. I know plenty of people that where told how to eat properly and after a week just said, “it’s too hard to follow. I don’t like it.” And just stopped. Doctors can inform people till they’re blue in the face but much like driving, people will just do what they want and blame someone else.

    15. If your still eating an unbalanced diet and just using the pill you will probably be malnourished. Junk food is calorie and fat rich but you proteins, fibre and minerals/vitamins to function.
