The map should look as it did in the 1780s rather than having modern borders.

the story of early morocco us relations was hilarious.

Morocco recognized the us and offered a treaty but didn’t hear back, so they recognized them again hoping to be noticed

Think Sweden was the first neutral (that did not actively participate on US side) head of state that recognized USA (many volunteers was over and the king was an unofficial supporter).

How did the country helping them the most (France) not recognize them as the first country?

don’t know about them but many people fine the USA barely recognisable these days.

    6. This map is wrong. Back then Louisiana was part of France. Other parts belonged to Spain

France was more than willing to fuck over the British. It just so happened they caused their own revolution in the meantime.

Another instance of shoehorning data perfect for a graph into a map

But the Morocoo thing is pretty cool ngl

    9. The Spanish to piss off England. The French to piss off England. The Dutch to piss off England.

Americas history with the Maghreb is hilarious.

The first country to recognize the United States was Morocco in 1777, the first country to seize an American ship was Morocco in 1784 and the longest continuous U.S. diplomatic treaty that currently still stands was signed in 1786 by, you guessed it, Morocco.

Alternatively, the first war the U.S. ever lost was against Algeria in 1785, and the first war the U.S. ever won against another nation was in 1805 when it fought a coalition of the predecessors of Algeria, Libya and Morocco.

These countries have the opportunity to do the funniest thing and stop recognizing the US.

most people don’t know this but there was also an alliance between US and an Indian kingdom(not native american), the Mysore state in india was at that time also fighting the british in the indian subcontinent and like US they were allied with France in a global conflict against the british. relations between US and Mysore state were never established and Mysore itself would loose the war against the british in 1799 solidifying british suzernity in southern India. There was also an US navy warship which was called USS Hyder Ally named after the king of mysore back then(Haider Ali)

Why Morocco before France, when France literally funded the revolutionary war?

    16. Shouldn’t USA just be the 13 colonies? Why is Alaska highlighted when it wasn’t a state until 1958?

Why have North America in this graphic just to show the USA? What a waste of space! And USA and the countries that recognized it looked a bit different in the 18th century.
