Life hack: just say you’re from Europe and we don’t tip there

  2. PeanutButterViking on

If I am standing up to order my food and/or paying for my food prior to eating it, I’m not tipping.

  3. This one simple trick fooled them all and its been around since forever. Its called cash. Pay with cash.

I went to a dispensary in Toronto for a pre roll and a lighter, they didn’t even have lighters…still was prompted for a tip.

They’ll say, if you can’t afford to tip then don’t eat out. Interesting strategy to tell people to stop supporting your workplace all together.

People are strapped for cash these days and can’t afford to top up someone else’s wages when their own wages aren’t enough. It’s pretty simple. Restaurants have been counting on customers tipping so they can get away with paying their servers less. THATS what needs to change

  6. I’m not sure why everyone is worried about the prompts. Just click custom and apply 10%. Simple. That’s what i do. And if its a takeout, then no tip.

  7. Got a prompt for a tip at a liquor store in BC the other day, didn’t put the case on a flat, singles in a bag, nothing. Easiest no tip of my life

If I go to an actual restaurant and being served, I’ll tip. If I go into a fast food restaurant, or order pickup, there’s no way in hell I’m tipping.

Min tip on the options is 20% for a lot of places now. That used to be reserved only for exceptional service. Now the cashier at Starbucks who acts like you’re inconveniencing them is expecting that.

  10. Honestly just don’t tip, places like Starbucks, subway, etc don’t deserve the tip. If you’re actually cooking and serving for me you get a tip based on the quality of your service. Don’t just expect a 20-25 percent tip

  11. I had a tip prompt come up at a tire place. First off they didn’t even take appointments so I had to wait over an hour for them to take me and their shop didn’t even have coffee or anything. Like what am I tipping you for – your inconvenience?

Has anyone ordered Dominos lately? There’s a 30% option on the app now lol.

  13. I will probably sound cheap here, but it seems like the cost to eat out has doubled since the pandemic. My favorite pita place used to be $16 for a combo and it is now $28 so damn close. Why should the percentage of tip go up if service people are already getting a near 100% raise?

I was driving through a town called Listowel the other day and I stopped at a KFC for lunch. They had a tip prompt!

Its crazy to see it at fast food chains.  I have no problem giving zero but I imagine they get enough to make it worth it

This article seems to be like 5 years or more behind the times. The rise in tip amounts has been a thing since just before COVID at the least.

The prompts can ask for whatever they want. At the end of the day I’m the customer and I will decide what tip, if any, is appropriate for the transaction in question.

Just don’t tip if you don’t want to. It’s a choice. Even if the prompt comes up with 25-35-45% options. Custom % or $ amount is just as easy a button to press.

Yeah no tip from me anymore if you’re not coming out from behind that counter, sorry pal.

  19. Ju_ju_nanananana on

I believe tip should not be paid with the bill.. put a money jar , envelope or a QR code (UPI pay as in India) for tipping.. and divide it with kitchen and serve staffs

  20. The whole basis behind tipping was that servers got paid less than minimum wage. They now get paid AT LEAST minimum wage BY LAW. We should be tipping less, if at all anymore.

Only place I tip is restaurants and 15% is the max. I do it shamelessly now

  22. ghost_n_the_shell on

I don’t tip outside of a sit down restaurant, and I don’t tip over 10 dollars. I don’t care if it’s Boston pizza or the keg.

I’m sick and tired of it.

You are actually doing society a service by NOT tipping in these absurd situation because the business will need to pay their employees more.

We went bowling for the first time in 20 years and was prompted for a tip when paying at the counter. What would you tip?

  24. VoightofReason on

It could say 1-5-10% I’m never clicking it. Cause I’m not giving my tip on top of the tax. Since the switch to debit/credit, servers have been getting more money because machines add tips after tax… also prices have gone up, as we know. So they’re making their tips on higher prices already… I’m confused why it’s my responsibility as a customer to fix the economy with a 30% tip.

  25. Bubbaganewsh on

If I walk up to a counter and order food then grab it and leave I am not tipping, period. I don’t tip at stores when buying items and food across a counter is no different. If I sit down to eat and someone brings me my food I will tip.

  26. The_Babushka_Lady on

Do people not realize this is entirely within our control. Don’t tip

  27. Minimum_Cow_3495 on

Tipping is not normal in the majority of countries around the world, pay proper wages and stop tipping!

  28. Tipping in the U.S. is to fix the shortfall between the wage paid and minimum wage. For eg – not exact figures- servers in the US get paid $3 an hr and minimum wage is $9 and hr so the tips are to make the servers whole.

Here in Canada everyone is paid at least minimum wage. A tip here is a gesture of goodwill and thanks. If I’m standing I’m not tipping and if I’m sitting I’m not tipping above 20%. They can prompt whatever they want.

  29. I am not tipping anymore unless I am in a jurisdiction where there are lower/tip salaries

  30. Born-Winner-5598 on

I carry cash with me. If I use a machine to pay for my sit-down meal, I leave a cash tip.

I have heard multiple stories of servers not getting their full tips when a machine is used.

Cash tip? Server is sure to get it.

  31. I only tip if at a sit down restaurant.
If we are ordering out, I should not be made to give you a tip. My food was not specifically prepared in a separate kitchen. You did not do anything out of the ordinary. You do not deserve an extra five bucks or whatever.

We started to bring cash when going out for dinner. Avoids the whole debit machine tip prompt.
