Russia hit Ukraine with a hypersonic ballistic missile 40 miles away from the border with Poland, in what has been described as a “grave threat” to European security.

Vladimir Putin’s troops fired the [nuclear-capable “Oreshnik”](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/11/22/vladimir-putin-hazelnut-russia-ukraine-oreshnik-missiles/) at the western city of Lviv, just over the frontier with the Nato and EU member state, and hundreds of miles away from the front line.

Ukraine, which is already suffering from power cuts and water shut-offs, said “infrastructure facilities” were struck.

The missile, which travels at 8,000 miles per hour, has only been used once before in combat, and, according to Russia, is impossible to shoot down.

Andrii Sybiha, Ukraine’s foreign minister, called it a [threat to the West](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/russia-ukraine-war/). “Such a strike close to [the] EU and Nato border is a grave threat to the security on the European continent and a test for the transatlantic community.”

Mr Sybiha said ‍that Kyiv was informing the US, European partners, and other countries about ‍the details of the strike through diplomatic channels. “Putin ‌uses ‍an IRBM [intermediate-range ballistic missile] ​near EU ‍and NATO border in response to ⁠his own hallucinations – ​this is ‌truly a ⁠global threat. And ‍it demands global responses,” he said.

Footage showed the bright bursts of multiple warheads raining down on the city and exploding on impact.

Russia clearly doesn’t have many operational oreshnik missiles otherwise they would have used more by now. Paper tiger.
