They kinda had to in most school before. It’s just that the no good and now former minister of education Bernard Drainville who replaced the previous no good minister Jean-François Roberge had to do something before leaving for another challenge so he made this thing mandatory, then he left. We had 3 ministers of education in the span of 2 years.

Which is the way it should be, and how it was when I was growing up and in school.
It has become clear the newer generations have become a bunch of entitled spoiled brats, and it clearly started by being disrespectful to their elders in school. About time they be forced to learn how things are supposed to be.
Growing up and teaching in western Canada – it’s always been this way over here. Not a provincial rule, but that’s how it was in every district I’ve studied and worked in.
I came from Russia, where in formal situations you’d address a person with their First Name + their Patronym. School, work, corporate events… Now imagine my shock when a Canadian uni prof told everyone to call him „Tony“.
Wasnt it always like that… was when i went to school… mr, mrs, miss ….
It’s the way it should be, it’s common knowledge and something you learn at a young age already.
We useto call our teachers sir and ma’am.
I’m old and left Montreal in the late 70’s so what is the French equivalent of Ms.

Yeah sure dont see a problem, but the consequences for not doing so are a problem. Getting expelled for not doing it???? (Ik its establishment specific so some are saying that)
I don’t understand why this changed? Are kids addressing their teachers by their first name?
The concern that some folks have is that non-binary teachers can no longer be called by the gender neutral pronoun in French.
The legislation means it has to be either madame/Mademoiselle or Monsieur. It can no longer be Iel
This is standard practice in France, so I’m surprised this wasn’t already the case in Quebec

Mr and Mrs feel dated and almost disrespectful to me. That said im in my 40s and it wasn’t too uncommon as a kid. Just never hear it anymore outside someone being a doctor.
I’ve never called a teacher by their first name unless I was intentionally trying to screw with them lol. Honestly even today if I saw my former teachers I’d probably call them Mr/Mrs
