Love that passive tense headline. No the Internet didn’t “collapse,” the Iranian government shut it down.
Hmm, I wonder if that foreshadows what the US will do in the event their citizens decide to rise up against their fascist government?
This is coming to America very soon. Once the AI bubble bursts and people actually protest large banks again, Trump will just shut off cell towers and let police sweep them all away. And, most Americans will comply.
Not just internet, but all lines of communication, landlines included

The Iranian theocratic regime throttles or cuts internet access during widespreads protests as part of their response plan to quell protests against the regime. I doubt the network „collapsed“ on its own.

People standing up to corrupt governments is a wonderful thing.

So many of our countries could do with people standing up.
Not collapsed obviously. It is the ultimate form of censorship, cutting off people to each other so they cannot organize protests.
The people just want to live decent and good lives in an open society. And the current Iranian religious government is getting in the way.
Every time the internet goes dark during protests, it’s not just about stopping communication it’s about killing resonance.
When there’s no witness, there’s no accountability. And when there’s no resonance, there’s no memory. Blackouts aren’t tactical they’re erasure.
This is r/technology supposedly, so we should mention that mesh nets are a thing. Check out the recent Benn Jordan video on this – lots of good ways to continue communicating in the age of smart phones, especially in dense urban areas / protests.
