What absolutely amazes me is while the market talking heads were chatting up the future like the invasion was no big deal, the numbers were telling another story. I read that as the hedge funds blinking

I don’t see why anyone is even talking about this. No private money is backing a pipeline, there’s not much more to discuss. If oil companies aren’t interested in taking on this project, it means there’s no case for it.

Even the G&M is getting lured into clickbait headlines…

That’s the thing about free markets and free-flowing capital. It will naturally find the best investments. In the case of a pipeline, it’s not the current price but the expected price 5 or 10 years out. I could offer my own predictions (e.g., if the US consumes Venezuelan oil, then does China become a customer for Canadian oil? will it take 10, 15 or 20 years to get Venezuela back up and producing? what does resolution of Russia/Ukranian war mean? etc) but it’s all way above my pay grade.

Carney did what needed to be done by eliminating or reducing policy inhibitors to the pipeline and „value“ signaling that they are much more open to a pipeline. After that, the markets will decide.

  4. Venezuela produces about 1m bbl/day that will now go to US refineries on the Gulf Coast. It isn’t a question of how long will it take to fully remediate the Venezuelan oil industry, but rather, how quickly they can take a chunk out of our 4m bbl/day. They might already be at a quarter of that.

It might take decades to fully remediate the Venezuelan oil industry, when Trump talks about 18 months, I wonder if the US is aware of quick wins that could bring more oil on tap in that timeframe.

I also wonder if the US will start gradually increasing tariffs on our oil as more Venezuelan oil comes on tap.

We don’t need another pipeline to the West Coast because we plan to dramatically increase drilling. We need another pipeline to be able to ship what currently goes to the US to tidewater and international markets.

As we have heard today, China is already looking at Canada to help replace what they will likely lose in Venezuela. TMX can currently send 890k bbl/day to the West Coast and could be improved to just over 1m bbl/day. We have 4m bbl/day we are currently shipping to the US, we need more capacity to be able to send that elsewhere.

We should maximize TMX and leave it at that.

We need more pipeline capacity going east for our own national security, right now part of our pipeline infrastructure runs through Michigan. Trump could cut us off from our own oil if he wanted to, and the governor of Michigan is actively trying to do so.
