It’s not a public holiday in Japan. Japan switched to the Gregorian calendar during the 1870s and they celebrate on December 31st / January 1st.

How come California surprised you? Quite a big Asian population there, with for example the Japantowns and Chinatowns in San Francisco.

Don’t know about the Americas but they don’t celebrate in Thailand, Japan and South Korea though.

I’m surprised Hawaii doesn’t observe it. The state is close to 40% Asian, a good chunk of whom trace their roots back to the Philippines and other countries that celebrate the holiday

It’s not really a public holiday in California the way the map implies, but I think it should be because many places treat it that way and it is a pretty big deal. I used to live in SF and now live in LA, and it is observed in some small way by pretty much the whole community, and in a bigger way by parts of the community.
