A banker supporting an amoral narcissist who is only interested in expanding the the wealth of his cronies and himself? I’m shocked I tell you.

CEO wants to follow the US imperialist expansion in South America and eat the carcasses. He might not like it when the US decides to try going north again. The economy likes stability and certainty and Trump brings the opposite.
Their estates department number(the only department that could actually deal with my dead father’s estate, apparently) was just a robot voice that said “goodbye” to my brother and hung up on him.
I was already staying away. There’s a million other banks I can get a savings account with .005% (non-promo) interest at.
TLDR: They have zero competitive advantages as a bank. They’d be wise not to piss people off.

Even if true, why on earth would the CEO of a major Canadian bank choose to say this out loud?
CEO Thomson’s salary target for **2025 will be C$11.5 million**, Scotiabank said, nearly 21% higher than his target salary in 2024.
So in 2025, this douche earned 240x the median Canadian salary, or something like a single day’s work assuming weekends off but no holiday.

This fucker doesn’t care that there will no longer be a Scotiabank anymore once Canada is next on the list of western hemisphere expansion. He would have moved on with his millions in bonuses by then.
I am sure most bank CEOs are wet at the thought of making money off south american expansion but at least they don’t say it out loud and gas light Canadians.

I do not see what is controversial about the actual comments cited in the article. Are people just reading the headline?
He predicted that Venezuela will probably see more growth now that Maduro is gone. No shit. Maduro policies resulted in a complete economic collapse and millions of refugees flooding other South American countries. “Yeah it’ll probably go up from rock bottom” isn’t that crazy of a prediction.
He also predicted that an apparent shift to centre-right and right wing governments in Latin America will probably drive higher growth rates than the centre-left and radical left governments did. That seems pretty plausible based on historical precedents, particularly in South America.
And then he ended that with a statement that he views the Trump Doctrine (ie the Trumpist revival of the Monroe Doctrine) as favourable for western economic interests. The article doesn’t provide any context or explanation, but it seems self evident that if all international competition is forced out of the region, someone in a western company will benefit. There isn’t anyone else positioned or capable of taking up the slack.
He didn’t say “this is a morally good thing” or “I like Trump” or whatever. It’s all economic prediction.

I will say this with my full throat: *fascism and corporations* have a symbiotic relationship. Fascists take more and more control of corporations, while rewarding their compliance with opportunities and punishing non-compliance with regulatory scrutiny. They will play favourites with the corporations that play ball and they will grind away the ones that don’t. This is why so many people in Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy were complicit — they were unwilling to suffer discomfort for a good cause, or unwilling to deny themselves a fat payday at the expense of their morals, indeed their very souls.

These oligarchs are the same as their counterparts in the states, they conduct their criminal business on the backs of our people, and since they got insider knowledge for trading, they’ll never feel the sting of a failing economy, cause they know how to get fat off the leaky boat while we all sink.

Kind of shortsighted on the CEO’s part, because Trump could just as easily use American influence over Canada to damage his business as much as he’s helping it.
That said, the new tripolar world order will hopefully spur concessions to the average person from the ruling class in the west, and we’ll cease wasting money we don’t have on vanity projects overseas.
