Iran’s internet was shut down nationwide as evening protests escalated, cutting off communication just as large crowds poured into the streets across the country.

The blackout began around 8 PM local time, right after a nationwide protest call by exiled Prince Reza Pahlavi. The shutdown followed growing digital censorship and was meant to block people from organizing and sharing information at a critical moment. Iranian media also confirmed the outage.

Despite the blackout, demonstrations spread across many cities, including Tehran, Isfahan, Kerman, Lahijan, Hamadan and Kermanshah. Protests were joined by strikes after Kurdish political parties called for a general walkout, with shops closing in Kurdish areas and dozens of cities nationwide.

Iran has used internet shutdowns before during major unrest in 2009, 2019 and 2022, often alongside deadly crackdowns that eventually suppressed protests. Even in normal times, social media is heavily restricted in Iran, pushing many users to rely on VPNs.

Ahead of the protests, a video message by Prince Reza Pahlavi urging people to protest from their homes and streets drew tens of millions of views online. As unrest continued, arrests and casualties rose. Rights group HRANA reported at least 36 people killed so far and more than 2,000 arrested, including children and teenagers, according to an Iranian lawmaker.

Reports also said security forces already opened fire on protesters in Kermanshah.

Iranians based in Iran said this would happen. The killings may start and the silence from western media is disturbing.
