This is good; these tech companies will want to get the youth addicted to LLMs as early and as deeply as possible, and this slows that process down.
But how else will those kids know where to find knives and matches?

Why only four years?
Good policy. In this climate, children’s AI toys must be assumed to be conduits for manipulation and influence unless proven otherwise.
That’s a good thing. I could imagine scenarios where shit gets weird in one of these toys‘ interactions with kids. Just because the corpos claim there’s pretty good guardrails on stuff like this and anything that goes wrong was an outlier doesn’t mean they’re actually safe.
A few weeks ago, I walked in on my daughter using some AI powered Peppa Pig app on her Amazon tablet. I blocked it immediately. It was called „Hey Peppa Pig“.

Um how about a permanent ban throughout the civilized world!
Probably a good thing but the first thing I thought of is that kids don’t exactly buy their toys and a “kids toy” is defined as what? Can’t a company just market a stuffed toy as “totally not a kids toy” and just avoid this?
These toys use tactics to keep kids playing with them.
I saw a video where someone explained that when kids try to leave, the toys make sad faces or ask questions to reengage them, it’s very concerning. No one should buy toys with ai for kids
Supertoys Last All Summer Long…
Our kids grandparents got my 2 and 4 year old a couple of these . Maybe ask the parents before you buy kids something with a camera and microphone that connects to the internet ?! Not to mention you have to talk to the things to get them working and my 2 year old doesn’t speak enough to do anything with it considering you talk to activate it with a specific phrase . Then my 4 yr old was non verbal until last year but even with as much as he talks now I don’t think he can operate it. The kicker? One year of “premium service” included and then it’s $15 a month to use most features it has
why not a permanent ban?
now this has to be renewed every 4 yrs and lobbyists will fill the pockets of lawmakers to get rid of it.
