There is no procurement decision. We’ve already picked the F35.
These are gonna be real useful when they attempt to annex us.
This is pointless. LM is not going to come up with the kind of offer that Saab has made in terms of economic development and jobs in Canada. So they’re just as likely to tell Canada to take the existing terms or walk, and be prepared for the political fallout if we choose the latter.
Thing is, Canada is not going to completely walk because we’ve already committed to, and paid for, the first batch of 16 F-35s. So the choice is either the F-35 or a mixed fleet. Too late for an all-Gripen fleet.
The fact that the block 4 variant we ordered is now way behind and won’t be functional until no earlier than 2031 – should be grounds to walk away from order and pivot?
Neither option is a winner at the moment. Pick F35 and condoning US aggression. Pick Gripen and encouraging US aggression. But, CF-18s need to be replaced. They should just buy the used Tranche 1 Eurofighter from the UK as a stopgap. That way, postpone the decision for another 4 year.

SAAB’s jets are the better deal.
It’s not too late to walk away from the US and their ’superjets which they can easily turn off remotely‘ flying junk.
The work-share for the F-35 has already been negotiated. Lockheed-Martin isn’t going to give Canada any more jobs on top of the ones it already got as part of the F-35 programme. Rather, those jobs can be taken away if Canada walks away from the F-35.

We should be working on something that can detect and shoot down an F35.
The goal with procurement should be to get the best possible product for the lowest possible cost. It’s not appropriate for the government to try to artificially increase the number of people hired to do the work. That would unnecessarily increase costs.
Does Canada really want to buy military hardware from a country that is threatening our NATO allies as well as ourselves?
