They control the military, the police, the social services, etc…they have a network of spies amongst the population that rats out the rest of the citizens, so people live in fear.

The regime still has some actual support in the population, with some people being religious. A lot of people also probably fear the uncertainty of what happens if the Ayatollah goes down.

Iran also doesn’t have separation of the police and military, like a democracy would. The police are a paramilitary force under the direct command of the Ayatollah:

Between this and Maduro, the supreme religious nutcase Khamenei must be pissing himself.

Putin just lost one puppet in Venezuela, one in Chechnya and now he’s losing one in Iran too. He’s fucked now.
