      Greeks from Megara founded the city centuries before Christ…then it became the capital of the Roman Empire and Haghia Sofia the most sacred temple of Christianity was founded in the 6th century.

      Actual Urban area of İstanbul sprawls over the purple area. Districts of Gebze, Darıca, Çayırova and even Dilovası are more connected to İstanbul rather than downtown İzmit (Kocaeli) even though they are official departments of Kocaeli province.
