-Venezuelas Human Development Index (HDI) folgte jahrzehntelang genau den Ölpreisen. Als der Ölpreis stieg, verbesserte sich der Lebensstandard. Als das Öl zusammenbrach, kollabierte auch HDI.
-Venezuela war für etwa 95 % der Exporteinnahmen und den Großteil der öffentlichen Ausgaben auf Öl angewiesen. Dies machte die Wirtschaft und die sozialen Folgen äußerst anfällig für Preisschocks.
-HDI stieg seit den 1990er Jahren stetig an und erreichte 2013, auf dem Höhepunkt des Ölbooms, seinen Höchststand von etwa 0,77.
-Nicolás Maduro kam 2013 an die Macht, kurz bevor die Ölpreise einbrachen.
-Öl fiel von über 100 US-Dollar im Jahr 2014 auf etwa 30 US-Dollar im Jahr 2016. Die Einnahmen brachen ein. Die Wirtschaft folgte.
-Bis 2020–2022 war Venezuelas HDI auf etwa 0,69 gesunken, wodurch jahrelange Fortschritte bei der menschlichen Entwicklung zunichte gemacht wurden.
-Das war nicht nur politisches Versagen. Es handelte sich um eine strukturelle Abhängigkeit vom Öl, das einem historischen Preisschock ohne Puffer begegnete.

This is a lesson in that a functioning nation requires diversity in its exports, including energy. The fact that the US is doubling down on petroleum production over diversification of renewables is very very risky in the long run because our government and economy become more tied to the boom-bust cycles of the industry.
Oil prices are global so Venezuelan HDI is reflecting the effects of global prices, nit the cause. Arguably the fracking boom in the US as well as OPEC production (of which Venezuela was a founding member) had a significant impact. What is true is that chronic dependence on oil exports cooupled with excessive intervention of free market economics meant that if oil prices coughed, Venezuela got the flu.
