Previously, we thought we needed to build massive, multi-billion dollar reactors (like the size of a stadium) to produce enough energy. This breakthrough proves we can potentially get that same power from smaller, more affordable machines.
They found a way to stay above the limit stably. They proved that we can live in this „density-free zone“ without the machine breaking, which was the primary engineering fear for 40 years.
We still need to solve material science issues (finding walls that can handle the heat long-term) If we want to commercialize fusion energy. But China is currently ahead of the fusion game before this, with this breakthrough they pretty much ahead of the pack.
