Would be a shame if they went under just because they are fairer than their rivals. Costa actually put considerably more coffee in their drinks than others such as Prêt, Nero and Starbucks.

  2. Coffee prices are ridiculous at the moment. I feel it even as a person just buying one bag of beans for my espresso machine.

  3. I like Costa, but it’s got to the point where I can order a drink from one cafe while being able to see another out of the window. I’m not even in a city. Why do they need so many cafés?

I won’t give my money to any of these big chains that find any way possible to avoid tax. I’m happy to spend time researching and then pay more to know it goes to a local business.

I think a lot of people are giving up on the brands. In Bristol and Bath the independents and local businesses are rammed.

  5. Not just Costa, but paying £10 for two regular hot chocolates from any chain is fucking wild. I’ve had to do it a couple times this week as we’ve been away and exploring the North (Berwick and York)

£10 for two fucking hot chocolates!!

  6. There’s probably some kind of proper name for it… But there seemingly is a limit to inflation when it comes to junk/fast/convenience products.

Raising prices eventually leads to them losing money as people say fuck it and don’t bother because nobody needs Costa coffee to survive

Horrifically priced coffee is silly… Can grind your own better coffee for a fraction of the price

Coffee chains need to get in the bin, really. If you go to a Starbucks or Costa and not an independent when you have the choice, you’re simply in the wrong unless the independents are proven to be shit first.

And no I don’t give a fuck if it’s fashionable to have a Starbucks drink specifically for the ‚Gram or whatever. That just makes you a fashion victim and wrong. Plus Costa is owned by Coke now.

They went from 6 beans to free Cofee to 10, no way cup of coffee should be this expensive

I was shocked when i went to buy a basic hot chocolate from Costa. I absolutely love their hot choc, it’s so delicious and actually tastes like chocolate unlike Starbucks but dear god it was pricey as fuck. Cost has gone up considerably!

People in my neck of Northampton refer to it as ‚Costa-lotta‘ for what it’s worth.

  11. They’re literally everywhere including hospitals so what the hell are they doing wrong.

When you can get a whole jar cheaper than 1 coffee and make 100 cups, I don’t get why people go to Costa and the like

  13. Shame really since dont they actually pay tax unlike Starbucks who pretend they dont make any money because they have to pay a company in Ireland an amount coincidentally the same as what would be the profits or some such?

Good! I want to see less chain coffee shops and more independents, similar to Australia where Starbucks failed to even enter the market.

I feel like this is a similar phenomenon to McDonalds and other cheap fast foods – they’ve gotten so expensive that the gap has closed between their pricing and the price of more premium alternatives, leaving them with no space.

Why would anyone want to give their money to a US company, instead of a UK owned coffee shop , that keeps our high streets alive and keeps many of our countrymen in business .

Shame that high street rents are so high that independent shops cannot come in and fill the void chains will leave.

I was in a train station a couple of days ago, feeling a little sleepy, and figured I’d get a Costa coffee for the journey. Was shocked to see it was £5. Decided to go to Boots instead, and get a sandwich, a pack of crisps, and an iced coffee for £4.5.

No idea how people can justify the cost of those coffees. Especially when a lot of places will let you get a hot coffee as part of their meal deal anyway.

  18. i don’t hate costa but i would encourage all to drink at local coffee shops that pay tax in the UK rathet thsn multinationals who siphon it out of the country

I only really go to coffee shops as a social event now rather than convenience/actual thirst, and try to support independents where possible, but this does make me a bit sad as you can usually sit inside a Costa unless it’s an express thing.

A lot of coffee shop chains my acquaintances/colleagues etc frequent literally just don’t have seating inside – and if they do, it’s 2 barstools smushed up against a window. Not from limited floorspace, but as a purposeful choice – they don’t even want you to stay in there anymore. Just buy the thing and eff off. Makes me sad.

  20. The Costa machines make better coffee than any Costa Barista has ever made for me.

The best high street coffee, by far, is Nero.

Go to your independents instead. Costa, Pret and Starbucks have their place for convenience but your independents will have much better coffee that doesn’t come out of an automatic machine or use mass produced lowest common denominator beans

Never drunk coffee in my life, the smell puts me right off, but I totally understand people being miffed

  23. Cultural-Turnip-8840 on

No wonder, you’re a mug if you want to pay over a fiver for a coffee. Stuff that

  24. I’m quite surprised since my costa is insanely busy and there’s 4 others literally within/on the outskirts of the shopping centre I work at

Then again the majority of customers are elderly so it wouldn’t surprise me if the biggest chunk of customers die off within the next 5 years leading to much less sales than even now🤷‍♂️

Put prices up and cut staff.

Now takes 10 mins to get 2 coffees and costs £10 for the privilege.

Shops are also dirty as not enough staff to tidy and serve at the same time.

Greggs is down the road. Nowhere near as good but half the price and half the time.
