Chevy Chase is defending his reputation following the premiere of a damning documentary about his life.
The original Saturday Night Live star, along with the director CNN’s I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not, sat for an interview with The New York Times in which he again insisted that he is “not racist.”
Chase played Pierce Hawthorne on the sitcom Community for four seasons from 2009 to 2013, until he allegedly used the N-word to criticize a storyline involving a blackface puppet and abruptly quit the show. Chase told the New York Times that he was “misunderstood” at the time.

I’m pretty sure you could find a headline or article where Chevy Chase insists he’s not racist from each of the last 5 decades. He’s certainly been unconvincingly claiming he’s not a racist for way longer than he was ever relevant.
Chevy is an equal opportunity a-hole.

A small part of me believes that Chevy is not racist because he hates everyone equally, but then there’s that N word from *Community*, which is impossible for anyone to defend.
I was listening to a movie podcast that had given Chevy the benefit of the doubt about his assholery. The argument was, maybe he did nice things that no one knows about. They went looking for stories about him being kind and compassionate to people. Like cards or gifts to costars’ children for weddings or birthdays, or donations to charities when someone he worked with got cancer or had a heart attack, or just a nice quote from Chevy about someone that had died. The podcast could find nothing. If nice things ever happened, no one spoke about it and it was never reported on. Of course, maybe Chevy did do nice things that have never been made public. The podcast didn’t do an exhaustive survey. But the fact that nothing came up was interesting.
I don’t think I have ever had to declare that. But then again I also don’t have a verified history of throwing the N word around at my place of work.
And I would even be willing to give benefit of the doubt if it was a single incident, he was drunk, or something like that. People can make mistakes. But the dude has a *long* and verified history of being a massive piece of shit and saying racist stuff. Sorry buddy. You should be apologizing, not gaslighting.
„I’m not a racist, I’m just a giant asshole“ is certainly a heck of a defense.

It’s just a total fucking coincidence that effectively every single human who has ever interacted with me hates me publicly, nobody invites me to things, and there are multiple witnesses to me being racist on the set of a show.

He is realising he won’t have the beloved legacy he thought he would. As we get older a lot of people start to take a look back – now he is seeing all he has left behind is burned bridges. Didn’t even get invited to the SNL 50.
Unfortunately, this just screams desperation to flip his image before death. He is now basically obsessed with his legacy and doesn’t want to leave behind such a tarnished one before it’s over.
Don’t worry Chevy, I can still watch and enjoy things you were in, but that doesn’t mean I have to like you much after seeing how outrageously you’ve acted off-screen.
