SS: New York City’s new mayor Zohran Mamdani wrote a note of support to jailed human rights activist Umar Khalid, as eight members of the US Congress urged New Delhi to ensure a fair trial in his case under international law.
Umar Khalid is a polarizing figure in India. To supporters, he’s a pro-minority rights activist and critic of government policy facing legal overreach (like the Citizenship Amendment Act BIll). To detractors, he’s an individual whose actions and statements were linked to organized violence and riots in Delhi in 2020.
His trial has not resulted in a conviction to date, and fundamental legal questions about evidence and rights continue to be contested in court.
