      If this is just about staffing, why not just close it and leave it intact to maybe reopen later?

      I imagine someone said something along the lines of „in the future humans wont need any books or access to information because grok ai will know everything for you“

      This is burning books without an actual bonfire. How sad, and this is our money. All these things were done with our taxes.
      Why can’t they offer the holdings to other libraries ?

      Things like this need to be preserved.

      It’s like how NSAS forgot how to make the Saturn V. That was inexcusable. We can not have any more memory lapses in technology like that.

      They did this several years ago to the library at the US Geological Survey in Menlo Park, California. Tons of priceless old books on paleontology, geology and earth science. They just pulped them. I was there as the crews from the disposal company were stripping the shelves. I even offered the guys cash to just let me save some particularly rare books. Nope. All turned to pulp and lost forever.

      I understand that historical records will be archived. If this is about books, let’s reach out and see if they’re able to donate the books. This seems easy to salvage.

      For folks lamenting about a library being shutdown you folks surely don’t like to read.

      From the article

      “This is a consolidation not a closure,” said NASA spokeswoman Bethany Stevens. The changes were part of a long-planned reorganization that began before the Trump administration took office, she said. She said that shutting down the facilities would save $10 million a year and avoid another $63.8 million in deferred maintenance…
      The library closure on Friday follows the shutdown of seven other NASA libraries around the country since 2022, and included three libraries this year. As of next week, only three — at the Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, the Ames Research Center in Mountain View, Calif., and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. — will remain open.”

      Seems this is something that has been happening for the past several years, super unclear about the throwing stuff out bit as well. Think there’s a bit more to it…

      What a complete joke. Are they waiting for SpaceX and Blue Origin to set up libraries for them too? NASA is a disgrace.

      Don’t worry, SpaceX will be able to rebuild all the federally owned spacecraft test equipment that is being thrown out.
