This is the wrong decision at a time when the government are pretending to delay (almost certainly cancelling) the Leeds metro, failing to deliver HS2, cancelling rail electrification,
Railways are expensive and cost money to run, invest in and improve. The majority of people who use them in the UK are richer and disproportionately based in London and the South East. There is a desperate need for more investment, particularly outside of that area. Either that money comes from taxpayers or rail users.
In 2029, Labour will not be judged on a fare freeze in the first half of their term, but whether the quality, quantity and financial sustainability of rail travel has improved. This will make all of that worse, which is a real problem when twinned with the nationalisation agenda, as people will attribute worse quality services with nationalisation.

Using that example table of savings theyve listed I’m shocked it’s £3 or so to get from Liverpool to Wigan without the discount but its £5 to get from Bootle to Liverpool which is a 10 minute journey.
