Vladimir Putin made an impression in both phone calls, but the second was much more ominous than the first.
Before hosting [Volodymyr Zelensky](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2025/12/26/trump-zelensky-ukraine-peace-talks-florida/) at his Mar-a-Lago estate, Donald Trump had drawn a startling conclusion after listening attentively to the Russian leader for two-and-a-half hours: the Kremlin was desperate for Ukraine to flourish and eager to help make it happen.
But when, following the conclusion of the Mar-a-Lago talks, Putin called back on Monday, his mood had soured.
While Mr Zelensky had been busy talking peace, he thundered, the [Ukrainians had tried to kill him](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2025/12/29/zelensky-asks-trump-for-50-years-of-security-guarantees/), purportedly firing drones at one of his residences in northern Russia.
Despite some astonishing language from Mr Trump in Putin’s defence, the Florida meeting had gone about as well as the Ukrainian president could have hoped. But the drone claim now threatens to derail the process for two reasons. It provides the Kremlin with a pretext to reject [the peace deal](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2025/12/22/sir-laurie-bristow-interview/) Mr Trump is attempting to broker, and it gives Moscow an opportunity to persuade a US president often receptive to Russian narratives that Mr Zelensky is the villain.
Indeed, a “very angry” Mr Trump appeared to support the Kremlin narrative in comments outside Mar-a-Lago on Monday, saying: “It’s one thing to be offensive because they’re offensive. It’s another thing to attack his house. It’s not the right time to do any of that.”
The Kremlin, which said it intercepted all the drones, provided no evidence for the alleged attack, which Mr Zelensky swiftly denounced as a lie. That did not stop Moscow from announcing a sharp shift.
“Given the final degeneration of the criminal Kyiv regime, which has switched to a policy of state terrorism, Russia’s negotiating position will be revised,” Sergei Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, said in a statement, signalling possible retaliatory strikes on Ukrainian government buildings.
How the US president responds to what Kyiv sees as a transparent attempt to sabotage the peace process remains unclear. Even now, after a year of repeatedly being blindsided by the Russian leader, Mr Trump resolutely refuses to think badly of Putin.

Why were there peace talks?
Putin is just stalling and reorganizing his army for the next attacks.
Trump is almost as gullible as his supporters.
It’s almost like he doesn’t want peace in the first place.

I thought putin only had an apartment and a lada and nothing else in his name.
“Could”? That’s the whole reason he made the claim. It’s the plan. He doesn’t want peace.
This is the same guy who blew up a bunch of Russians in order to take over Russia. He’s willing to do, say or kill anything and anyone.
It was likely a false flag incident (if it happened at all).
I recall a previous alleged incident where the Russians accused Ukraine of trying to attack Putin while he was in a helicopter. That also seemed very unlikely.
I don’t get why this is given so much attention?
How is it extraordinary that a liar is lying?
And even if he wasn’t, a legitimate target getting hit during war is not that special either.
So why are we even paying attention to what is clearly a diversion? Fuck.
There have never been any talks on peace; business deals yes, peace no (see Gaza).
There are no „peace“ talks. Just a colossal waste of diplomatic effort to appease Krasnov and his entourage.

Didn’t happen but… Putin often wears a military uniform therefore he is a legitimate military target.
Russia has obviously never wanted peace, but they also cannot afford for the war to end. If it ends, they lose, 100%, no way around that. Even if they suddenly captured all of Ukraine overnight, that would be the end of Russia. Above all else, for their goals to work, they need the war to continue. that is why all the lies and political flip flopping. And Trump plays well into it all, as he was intended to. There is a bigger picture here, and this isn’t about Ukraine. This is the set up for WW3, and Ukraine is just the field this first little bit is taking place on. The real heavy stuff won’t begin until China enters the fight with a move on Taiwan, probably in late 2027. Then everyone will clearly see why Putin was softening up NATO and the relationship between the US and Europe. Then everyone will see why Iran set its proxies to enticing Bibi into war. Then everyone will see the frontrunners of BRICS for what they actually are.
But hey, in the meantime, keep pretending as if these „peace talks“ actually have a chance to end things.
Gawwwwd already! The man who vomits lies as habit. Who eats them in his borscht every day. The man who lives in a bubble of lies from his commanders and the media and everyone else repeats every fart lie utterance as though “well, maybe it’s true this time, I don’t know 🤔”

Putin is effectively keeping the west divided. He is effectively keeping the US from committing to the defense of Ukraine despite a moral obligation to do so.
Wasn’t that the idea ?

There are soldiers dying on both sides and this guy would scrap all the talks because he personally feels unsafe. Says a lot really.
Who cares? What’s needed here is not peace; it’s Russian defeat.
There are no real peace talks. Just an avenue so that trump can claim Ukraine is at fault, and thus still no tariffs on russia, no tomahawk missiles, no further sanctions, no intelligence sharing. All putin plan. And trump doesn’t care as he is getting another „Peace Prize“ from Israel.
People who want peace don’t invade their neighbors land…. Fuck outa here with that shit
