      This is a hilarious breakthrough.

      Lithium-ion batteries require lithium, cobalt, and nickel materials that are expensive, hard to mine, and environmentally damaging. This battery uses nothing but air. It is 100% recyclable, has a lifespan of 30-40 years.

      China is essentially breaking out of the rare earth monopoly they essential control.

    3. It’s just compressed air storage, this isn’t new. Might be the biggest installation but let’s stop accepting IE’s clickbait headlines.

    4. Round trip efficiency for existing batteries is around 80%, pumped hydro storage is also around 80%. SMES is up around 95%.

      This compressed air system is claiming 55% round trip efficiency.

      Yes, this is an interesting project but it’s not problem solved. You need to produce far more energy using CAES to deliver the same peak time supply.

      It’s also worth mentioning that losses in transmission are about 5% per 1000km, so being located in the Gobi desert means that probably only half of the electricity produced by these solar panels and storage in this compressed air system will actually end up being able to be used by households.
