      When it comes to entertainment, we live in an era of asymmetrical information. Technology companies are sitting on more data than they know how to use, and yet the average person or business partner has access to very little of it.

      Talk to any Hollywood producer, agent or lawyer, and they will gripe about how much harder it is to measure success and how little they know relative to Netflix Inc. or [Amazon.com](http://Amazon.com) Inc. They don’t know the exact value of Stranger Things to Netflix, for example.

      We do have enough information to understand what’s working, what’s not and what’s changing. We have examined several years of Nielsen viewing data — enough to offer a thorough look at our evolving viewing habits.

      Netflix really isn’t „appointment television“. It’s background noise.

      It’s not like HBO has been better. The writing on a lot of prestige TV sucks lately, so why get invested?

      We have YouTube, TikTok, Reddit, video games, etc.

      To be clear, there are shows worth watching – but there are way more free dopamine sinks that are immediately in front of me.

      well when they’re making second screen viewing ai filled slop that they’ll take years to release a single season and then cancel it at the drop of a hat while continually shoving more ads into what were ad free plans that they continue to increasingly price gouge for…yo ho ho.
