      Not the way.

      1) Allow fully anonymous websites, eg Reddit.
      2) Require ID for websites in which the user is expected to be a real person, eg Facebook
      3) Make a user choose whether they are anonymous, or real, for websites like Twitter, on signup.

      I’m not sure you can put the genie back in the bottle at this point, but I’d agree with the view that online anonymity has been a detrimental thing to society.

      This would be hard to impossible to implement in practice. Anyone can VPN to any country these days where Ireland has no jurisdiction.

      We have maybe 2 years maximum left of a somewhat free internet in Europe. Was fun, as I’m going offline the day Wikipedia asks for my ID and reason fr visiting, the internet is a free space, noone tells me what I can say (try me UK) or what content to consume.

      I’m from Belarus, where you can go to prison for criticizing the government, but even here anonymous accounts and VPNs are not banned.

      Its wild, all the stories of people being forced to surrender details of their social media when trying to enter the US gets rightly criticised on this sub but when our own governments look to do the exact same – only to their own citizens, plenty of people running around acting like it is necessary.
