It could be a hot take, but I am against any more countries joining the customs Union. You’re either in or out. No more sweat deals where you get the benefits and non of the negatives.
I’m surprised Paul Nowak isn’t towing the labour line as he normally does.
Pound has to go.
This isn’t even news in the UK, yet it’s news on the continent.
There’s no chance the UK will join a customs union, and there’s certainly no chance the UK will rejoin the EU.
Without your old advantages, you re welcome.
I think it is inevitable. First UK joins the customs union and then at a later time rejoins the EU when enough time has passed that nobody loses face.
I’d rather we just fully rejoin the EU, including things like adopting the Euro
These type of articles are what you call ‘news fodder’. When there is no real news to report, outlets publish these cheap stories that add no real value.
Yes, both sides could do with a better overall relationship but the UK will never join the Customs Union in our lifetime again.
There is no world where they adopt the Euro etc. it is just NOT happening.
All these articles do is further inflame viewpoints on both sides for the weak minded.
But they have the USA.
Both hate EU so much.
It’ll be 350mil a week then.
🇺🇸🦅🍻💃🏼
In my opinion, the Customs Union is overrated.
It doesn’t give you access to the Single Market like a member. It just reduces some red tape, but not much. You’re still a 3rd country to the EU. (Like Turkey)
The UK had the best deal they’ll ever have when they were in the EU (never had to switch to euro etc etc). I doubt they will ever be part of it in any form ever again
Why’s it a red line when during the Referendum, leave supporters like Farage constantly said we’ll be like Norway and Switzerland (customs union and single market).
That red line policy is making Britain poorer by the day.
Why Labour acts like it’s their job to uphold Brexit doesn’t make sense to me.
Brexit was a Tory misstep. A very clear mistake. Seems like the easiest thing in the world would be blame everything bad on the Tories, Rejoin the EU. Then profit. Sure. It might be a wee bit of a lie to blame it all on the Tories, but that’s politics.
You can be damn sure that if the shoe was on the other foot, the Tories would hammer Labour with the failures of Brexit and seek a reversal.

Starmer Rejects the Idea of Britain Rejoining the EU Customs Union
He Insists Such a Move Would Endanger *Post-Brexit Trade Agreements* and Complicate Ongoing Negotiations With Brussels
Post Brexit trade agreements…
I’m extremely skeptical that any PBTA’s are worth much to the UK, in fact I would go as far as to say they’re a negative to the UK *people*.
Happy to be proven wrong..
And as for complicating negotiations with Brussels – again, this probably means they can’t screw the people over as much if we’re back in.
edit: *of course*
His stance indicates that he prefers Britain’s post-Brexit capacity to strike trade deals around the world—chiefly with President Donald Trump—to the complexity of negotiating a return to the European customs area
Aw…they still think they’re going to win the next eelction!
Unless they change FPTP and get rid of the ridiculous voter ID–not a chance.
I think even without any of the old advantages that Britain could not rejoin any part of the EU, Customs Union or Single Market as long as the Conservatives still think Brexit was a good idea and Nigel Farage is still powerful in the political sphere.
Simply because if and when they get into power they will hit the reverse gear and screw everyone (other then themselves over).
We’re not rejoining anytime soon, as we would likely have to accept a lot of politically suicidal items.
Essentially all the benefits we had of being a founding member, and Europe basically saying “yeah thanks for WW2”
So no veto, lose the pound and join the euro… etc
If they offered us an easy route back in on previous terms I think we would bite their arm off.
Understandably.
As much as it pains me to say.
The British Political establishment just needs to get it through their thick stubborn skulls that they were wrong about Brexit. It was a lie. End of. It messed up their country, created a massive mess over in Ireland because of their ignorance and they got nothing but some sop deals while losing the benefits of being in the EU. They thought they could get better deals with the US. Trump is their reality check, that orange bollocks has screwed everyone including them and has undermined the US for many many years and even the Dems getting back in are going to be busy trying to undo the damage he’s gone.
They need to just cop on and stop acting the bollocks. Get back in the EU. Cut their losses and come help instead of looking for exceptionalism and for the love of god shut down that Russian Useful Idiot Farage and his friends once and for all. That corrupt little bastard was essentially Russia’s Rent-a-tool, he got money for undermining the British and weakening them for his own personal benefit. He’s a liar and grifter.
The EU is the best chance of turning things around despite the flaws, they got the ability to regulate and reign in some of the worst excesses of the billionaire class who have been ruining society for years, are responsible for the enshittification of the US and helping get Trump into power and with Vatnik Russia being a major threat to Europe into the future everyone needs to band together to keep them walled off in their own shitty country.
