The Western Command was one of Myanmar’s 14 regional military commands and its capture by the Arakan Army (AA) marks only the second time a regional command has fallen to resistance forces since the 2021 coup. The first was the Northeastern Command in Lashio, Shan State, in August 2024. This loss further erodes the junta’s control over key regions and isolates the state capital, Sittwe.
