Canada can’t rely on U.S. ~~health institutions~~ anymore

Time to align with the Europeans.

Yup, we can’t trust the FDA’s new drug authorizations in the US. They are handing out exemptions to drug testers like candy. The new Wegovy weight loss pill was fast-tracked, and I pray that it gets properly vetted, by the EU or by our own health system.

Never should have to begin with. They are run by big pharma.

We ought to step up and develop our own facility to fill the hole the CDC/US has abdicated.

There was a time I’d suggest tying it to the U of A, who’s always seemed like they were one of the better centers for health reasearch. (though I don’t know if thats actually a thing, or just propaganda from living in Ab(

Unfortunately its true. We will need our own researchers, scientists, etc We certainly have learned how much we relied on the US and many US citizens came to realize how much we supported the US and their pockets

We should never have allowed ourselves to become this reliant on the United States in the first place. Geographically and economically, close ties make sense. That part is unavoidable. But we have ceded far too much power, influence, and decision making simply because the American market is larger.

Canada has no shortage of smart people or strong institutions. Size alone does not mean we cannot build, govern, research, and cooperate on our own terms. We should be looking far more seriously to Europe, and if not Europe broadly, then at least Britain and other Commonwealth countries. Our historical ties matter, but so do practical similarities in governance, regulation, health systems, and data standards. Diversification is not anti-American. It is basic risk management.

That risk has now become obvious.

Donald Trump has shown how much damage a single individual can do when institutions are weakened or captured. His first term was bad, but it was partially constrained by people within the system and by members of his own party who understood that not everything should be torn down. Many of those individuals have since been purged or sidelined. The guardrails are weaker now.

It is easy to dismiss Trump as old, erratic, or unserious. But the real danger is not him personally. It is what comes after. What happens when someone younger, sharper, and more disciplined adopts the same style and tactics, but with more patience and longevity? That is what unsettles me most.

All the more reason Canada needs to create distance where possible. Not through a dramatic or unrealistic break, but through deliberate choices. Broader partnerships. More independent capacity. More cooperation beyond a single neighbour. This will not happen overnight, and it does not need to. But the lesson is clear. Overreliance is vulnerability, and we are past the point where we can afford to ignore that.
