Sensible move, it creates jobs and maintains our industry.
That should be our role in European defence. Not bring large numbers of men to fight the Russians but instead using our resources to build our defence industry and buy the best kit.
This might be a nice powerpoint goal for MoD, but there is no way UK infrastructure will be able to build/produce one new AUKUS nuclear attack submarine every 18 months or in a near future. Just as a comparison, the same UK shipyard produced/is producing one Astute-class submarines every 11 years on average. No way they can shrink that down 6-7 fold with a snap of a finger.
It’s at least a decade out if this ever happens at all.
So, is aukus sub gonna be the Astute replacement for Uk and new sub for Australia? So is that about 20 subs that need building?
You forgot about the Australian Submarine Corporation yard in South Australia, that can and will be used for the construction of these submarines
The UK committing to one AUKUS nuclear attack submarine every 18 months shows serious long-term investment in naval defense
This is just the commitment from the SDSR. Nothing new since then. Meeting that build rate will require a large ramp up in the output rate, and probably significant investment in Barrow (the town itself, not just the shipyard). It does seem to be being taken seriously though, the yard itself has a lot of investment going into it and the recent news that Babcock will build sections for Virginia class boats at Rosyth will hopefully be part of how this is achieved in the UK.
Assuming it’s stuck to, a fleet of 12 attack boats is a really serious improvement for the Royal Navy.
Meanwhile, the average reading in the UK is 8.
Hopefully AI can run the subs, eh?
Ha, ha, ha.
Checks calendar, isn’t April 1st. There’s no chance of Barrow being able to do that.
Oh yeah, the subs built in collab with Trump that he and his mooks will gleefully leak the position of to Putin…
rather have this than a functioning health service for sure, very sensible civilisation we’ve built.
Now we just need to remove the American element from its position in the maintenance of our nuclear deterrent.
(Yes, I understand that these are nuclear powered subs, conventionally armed. But we now need to think about our *entire* strategy moving forward.)
Perhaps, if we don’t want to go it completely alone, we could bring France into the fold instead?
Are we gearing up for ww3?
Meanwhile Pla navy ship printing go brrrrrrrrrt
