      Isnt a large part of the population unable to digest milk in Asia, so milk products were selling bad anyways?

      Same reasoning as the EU tariffs on chinese EVs, it’s just logical, it’s probably not as big as a market anyway.

      Good. We produce far far too much dairy in Europe.

      As we age, we almost all become lactose intolerant, except for like Irish people, so dairy produces are way overused, especially in Asia. Ain’t hard to make good cheeses from nuts.

      Edit: Yes, cured cheese do trigger the inflamation, runny nose, etc related to lactose intolerance.

      The chinese are crazy for german milk formula powder for babies, because of the high hygiene standards. They import it in big amounts , these climbing costs will not help their dropping birth rates

      This tariff game is stupid. How about we all reduce exports and rely, to the extent possible, on food we grow in our own region, be that very local or across a few neighboring countries? It would be better for the environment and provide a higher measure of food security.

      despite the harsh rhetoric, America is still the best choice for Europe. we’ll buy this cheese no problem. if you think about it Greenland is a really cheap price to pay to be under the American umbrella. After all, despite all the sovereignty talk, Germany announced more defense deals with the US and France is getting in bed with Palantir

      BEIJING/BRUSSELS, Dec 22 (Reuters) – China will impose provisional duties of up to 42.7% on dairy products imported from the European Union, the latest in a series of measures against EU exports widely seen as retaliation for the bloc’s electric vehicle tariffs.

      The duties, to be collected from Tuesday, will range from 21.9% to 42.7%, although most companies will pay just under 30%. They target unsweetened milk and cream and fresh and processed cheeses, including the iconic French Roquefort and Camembert.

      China’s Ministry of Commerce said it had found evidence that EU dairy imports were subsidised and hurting Chinese producers.

      # ‚UNJUSTIFIED AND UNWARRANTED‘ MEASURES

      The European Commission, which oversees EU trade policy, said the investigation was based on „questionable allegations and insufficient evidence“ and called the measures „unjustified and unwarranted“.

      It already lodged a [complaint](https://www.reuters.com/markets/eu-launches-wto-challenge-against-chinas-european-dairy-subsidies-probe-2024-09-23/) at the World Trade Organization more than a year ago.

      „Right now, the Commission is examining the preliminary determination and will provide comments to the Chinese authorities,“ a spokesperson said, noting that the investigation was set to conclude by Feb 21.

      # DAIRY A ‚POLITICAL PAWN‘ IN EV DISPUTE

      Monday’s decision is provisional and could be revised when a final ruling is made. China [significantly lowered provisional tariffs](https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/china-cuts-eu-pork-tariffs-final-ruling-2025-12-16/) on pork in its final decision last week.

      Trade tensions with the EU erupted in 2023 when the European Commission launched an anti-subsidy investigation into [Chinese-made electric vehicle](https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/eu-slaps-tariffs-chinese-evs-risking-beijing-payback-2024-10-29/)s. It imposed tariffs in October 2024.

      In apparent retaliation, Beijing has imposed measures on imports of EU [brandy](https://www.reuters.com/world/china/china-impose-duties-up-349-eu-brandy-starting-july-5-2025-07-04/), pork and now dairy.

      Conor Mulvihill, director of Dairy Industry Ireland, said it was frustrating that dairy seemed to be used as a „political pawn“ in the wider EU-China EV dispute.

      China’s Ministry of Commerce said negotiations over the bloc’s EV tariffs resumed this month. A senior European diplomat in Beijing said last week that major issues remained between the two sides.

      The Commission said it continued to engage with China on the possibility of replacing EV tariffs with minimum price commitments, although these price undertakings had to eliminate the harm from unfair subsidies and be practicable.

      Well it was time we cut back om dairy here, so i guess thank you China.

      It’s funny they don’t tariff milk powder though, probably because last time Chinese manufacturers poisoned a bunch of Chinese babies
